Hi All.
in need of a little help iv been a beauty therapist for 4 years and have only had in house training by my boss on spray tanning hollywoods and eyelash exstentions and feel fully confident to carrry out these treatments my question is as i dont hold a certificate in these treatments am i covered by the insurance i never relly thought about it untill recently wen i started working mobile and wasnt sure if i could legaly offer these treatments. Thanks for any advice in advance x x

yes you will need your certificates for your insurance. also to buy products for eyelash ext you need to have a proper certificate as with hollywood waxing this is specialised waxing and need appropriate certificates  hth

Do you hold any NVQs in beauty therapy?

Hi yes im nvq3 qualifiyed for 4 years. u can buy eyelash exstentions from capital i have been buying them from capital for years but only to do friends and family untill recently as i would like to offer them to my private clients. and have been using novu lash in the salon i work for. everysalon i have worked for has happily allowed me to carry out spary tanning and hollywood tretments without a proper certificate in these tretments. its seams a wast of money to go on a course to gain a certifcate in treatments i have been carrying out for years with no proplems.

but if you start doing clients you will need insurance to cover you so you would need the certificate just like you did with waxing and so on at college, if something went wrong your not covered, we can easily pass on our experience to each other on how to do a treatment but we need a certificate from a repitable company to do safely and to cover ourselfs x

In my NVQ we covered eyelashes in NVQ2 and spray tanning was covered in NVQ 3 and waxing in NVQ2 as well, but not intimate waxing.

Do you have your own insurance at the moment ? If not then you need to get some ASAP for the areas that you have already covered in your NVQ and ask them about the areas that you have only had inhouse training for.

I also don't think that it is a waste of money to go on these courses, you never know how much the industry has moved on and whether there are new techniques to be learned or new products to be road tested.

You may not have a problem performing these treatments but you would certainly have a problem if you were sued and had no insurance !

i agree i should have the proper certificates am a little confused as to how then all the salons i have worked for including 1 five star spa and 1 six star spa are being able in in house train there staff iv also lernt hot stone massge from in house trainning am a little concerned that i have been carring out all these treatments uninsured for 4 years.

You were probably covered by their own insurance ! Dont stress get your sorted and see what your insurer says

yes of course i have insurance for the treatments im qualifed to do. and i dont meen a compleate wast of money but spending a good £600 on the training for things i can do in a resestion wen iv just been made redundent and wen i am just starting up in business on my own is not a realistic option. i will ask my insura but am still confused how i could have been covered by previous employers insurance if my insura wont cover me. theres no difference insurance is insurace and ur ither qualifyed or your not.

have you asked your previous employer if they can provide you with training certificates for the areas that you have covered with them ?

if not and your insurer says that you have to get a certificate then I am afraid that you will have to bite the bullet and go and do the courses in order to get your insurance.

Have a look at the events section, you can get spray tan training from as little as £55, you can make that back in two/three tans, some of the eyelash companies offer free training with a starter kit and I know that kim lawless does a female intimate course for £200.

The certificates are then yours ! Start your business with what you are insured for and build it up from there.

good luck, hopefully some of the scottish geeks can give you more info on courses nearer to you

Yes most insurance companies will ask to see copies of your certificates before they will cover you. Not all companies ask for certificates before you can buy from them so there shouldnt be a problem to get your supplies but would your employer not be able to help and confirm you have been doing the treatments for 4 years? That might help you when you speak to your insurance?

ABC beauty in dunfermline do an intimate waxing course, without kit its £75 I think but you could give them a call, tbh I dont know how the salons get away with not having you trained ie by a company providing a certificate and being able to insure you, but then never worked in a salon so perhaps is different for that hth xx

As far as i'm aware, you don't need a separate certificate for brazilian waxing. As long as you have a basic waxing certificate then you will be fine to do brazilians.
I would check with your insurance company as regards to the other two treatments but i'm thinking that you probably will need certificates for both.

Thanks for all replies so far. i will ask my insura about the hollywoods. i would like to know if anyone else has been trained in salon and is perfoming treatments in that salon without certificats if they dont mind sharring just to see how common this is. and if anyone has more info the the first question that would still be very helpfull. x x

There are a lot of therapists that offer Brazilian waxing without doing a seperate course, it isn't something you have to have however as a salon owner I decided to get my girls trained. They had one on one training which cost me £95 pounds each. I have done a hot stone massage course that was seperate to the one that one of my brands offers, but one of my girls has only done why was offered by the brand within a particular treatment but with in hose training has been able to go on and do full body stone massage and we are covered by insurance. Our spray tanning was covered in salon by the company, no certificates were issued and we have then taken that training on ourselves for new therapists.

Checking with your insurance company should definately be your starting point and some insurance companies will have their own 'policies' but whilst working for a salon that has trained you, you are usually covered by their insurance.

Hope you get somewhere and good luck! X

Thanks for all replies x x
