Hi,

So, I've got a guy who works for me. He's great with the customers but sometimes the other girls working with me have minor run ins with him...basically he's good at his job but there are things that are not hair cutting related that aren't the best with him.

Also, things are quiet. At the moment he's probably bringing in his wages and nothing else.

So, I went on Facebook today, and I'm friends with him on there. Up pops the status update on his page..."Thinking of moving to Gran Canaria"

So what do I do? Am I overreacting by worrying about this? We're having appraisals tomorrow, but don't know if I'm being stupid by getting a bit annoyed about this. Just don't wanna spend all this money trying to build up his clientele, because at the moment he is just clearing his wages and nothing else...for him just to up and leave?

Thanks in advance for any advice. xxx

It may have been a sarcastic remark due to the weather hun

I would tackle him. If he admits it, and has been working for you less than a year, I would give him notice there and then. Times are tough enough without deadweight, difficult people stirring things up in your salon.
If he says not, or has been with you more than a year, I would blast him about his behaviour with the others. Shape up or ship out as it were.
Big deep breath, and think of ya ratbag pal persianista x

I'm a abit of a chicken when it comes to staff...should i say something to him about stirring things with the other girls? Part of me thinks its the girls battle, if he annoys them they should say to him, but also don't want a bad atmosphere. I'm gonna say to him tomorrow. got a big sheet with all the things i wanna say about how we all need to get our heads down and get as many clients in as possible etc etc...he's just great with his clients and they love him. :D

thanks to both of you, persianista you make me laugh but i love your posts. i aspire to be the employer you are :cool:

he's only started in nov, said id keep him til end of dec and have sicne said id keep him to end of feb. but as yous ay, cos its less than a year he just needs the weeks notice, worst case scenario.

My personal experience is that disruptive staff get worse not better. As he is only clearing his wages you lose nothing by losing him.
All the time you spend building his clientelle could be spent with a fun, bright, willing hairdresser that will add to your salon.
Having had oodles of experience with difficult staff, I say get rid.

Could you come and do it for me?! lol

I will have serious words tomorrow and a good think about it tonight.

Thank you, very much appreciated xx

I have a member of staff that Im always checking on facebook and I never know whether to confront her or not. She wont turn up and be late and stuff but then saying I had a great nite last nite! sooooo annoying. Sometimes I wish I wasnt on facebook. I tend to say nothing and put it too them in a different way ......... i.e What are your plans for the the next 2 month? Hand them the rope and let them hang themselves

My god! you are all so nice! Wish I worked for you. x

your cat looks evil...scaring me along with your no nonsense attitude!!! lol i will let you know how it goes x

This is Jasper, my blue persian. The sweetest, most polite cat you ever met, a true gentleman...... till I stuck an evil grin on him

I totally agree with Persianista, every single thing she says!

Kimberley, you know what? If you could gather the strength to say what you think you would feel so liberated! It would make you feel stronger and you won't go home at night saying to yourself 'I should have said this or that'.

Say things as you go along, don't bottle things up, that is the way to go. Do not start a comment with 'I don't mean to be funny' just say what you think!

Really, it works and you will gain respect from your good staff and the bad ones will clear off and good riddance!

You are the boss, this is your business and they are employed by you under your rules, just rise up and meet the challenge my darling, do it once and you will be able to do it again and again.

Thank you!!! :)

I am at the moment typing up bullet point of things I need to cover, have already spoken to one member of staff, she is a gem, but I am going to discuss with the trouble maker today.

I know I should be more forthcoming...at the end of the day, I am the boss and I'm paying the wages!!!

Still doesn't stop the sick feeling I have in my stomach...lol

Will Keep you posted :D

PS I'm kind of looking forward to it :p xxx

Nobody enjoys having to do these things. This is your business so you have to do what you know in your heart is the right thing. Have you ever read the book "feel the fear and do it anyway"? If you find expressing yourself difficult it will really help you.

No I've not read that. But I will look for it now...

THANK YOUUUUUUUUUU xxx

So what conclusion did you come to? What was the outcome?

Well. we had a chat, before we did he said to us about the gran canaria thing, that he was just joking about...

i basically said we all need to pull our weight and chip in with all the cleaning and general running of the salon..which he said he does...

i said to him at the moment im cutting his hours because i can't afford to cover his wages with the amount of clients he has in, and that at the end of the month we would review the situation with the view to whether he will be able to stay on or not.

I then re-emphasised that we all need to get on as a team and that the girls have made a few comments to me about his behaviour when I'm out of the salon and what he has said to them..he said oh i hope i havent offended anyone and i just said...well we need to all work together to make the salon work and i want us all to get along.

he seemed pretty sheepish the whole time, and did pull his weight most of the rest of the day ( althought later on he tried to claim he'd been on his feet all day, had only taken 5 mins for his lunch...which i laughed at and told him there was no way he was convincing me that was true)

spoke to my employment lawyer and he said all i need to do is give him a weeks notice and tell him i was not busy enough.

so we shall see at the end of the month...but he interrupted me infront of a client and was immediately reprimanded in the back of the salon. think he's got a bit of a shock at me today!!

You go girl!!! Do you feel better?

i feel like i could have been more, for want of a better word, mean to him...

but i feel better that i know hes got a bit of a fright. and that hes aware his job may be on the line.

:D thank you xx

You did fab, you actually sound like you were very professional so well done and I bet you feel great xxx

Am feeling much better yea. and have had a busier week in the salon so we'll just see how the rest of the month goes!!!
