I sure there are probably different answers depending on the manufactuer but how does a strengthener actually work? From a chemical point of view i guess

I specificly refer to Creative's Toughen Up as thats what i have!

thanks

Ps Full of questions today!

There are strengtheners and hardeners! One adds toughness and flexibility and the other dehydrates the nail plate to make it harder (the downside of that process is that nails can become brittle and break even more easily if used too often).

CND Toughen Up is a strengthener and works with a chemical that actually promotes cross linking within the natural nail!! So it promotes a natural strengthening process. It is the only strengthener I know that works this way. HTH

So is the strengthener acting a bit like a splint? (only example i can think of!)

And is the hardener varity the type you apply every day for a week or something then remove and start process again?

thanks

I LOVE this place!

No .. the strengthener adds flexibility and toughness to the natural nail (speaking of CND Toughen Up). If nails are flexible they tend not to break. This is what we want.

No .. you can really do this with either a strengthener or a hardener.

A hardener works by dehydrating the natural nail plate to make it more compact and hard (this also makes it more brittle and more prone to breakage after awhile which defeats the purpose of it in my view). But hard isn't really what nails should be.

Nails should be able to bend without breaking; that is what toughness means. Toughness is a blend of flexibility and strength.

Glad to help.

I make my own cuticle oil.....

But .... if you don't, get them to start using cuticle oil (using natural ingredients, NO MINERAL OILS) Solar Oil is a great product ...... on a regular basis, it will change the texture of their nails, nourish the cuticles at the same time and make nail hardeners obsolete.

Many nail hardeners make the nails brittle, whereas oils make them flexible, encourage growth and the general interest in applying cuticle oil daily will make them pay more attention to what's going on.

They will love you for it and will come more often for manicures.

thanks.

I do retail Solar Oil for my natural customers as well as my enhancement ones and it goes down well with both.

I was asking really just so i know!

When i placed my last order with CND I brought some Toughen Up and Sticky as i didnt have them and it occured to me i have no idea how it works and if i want to retail or even just use it I like to explain how to my clients

Toughen up,and solar oil maintain these babies, which are natural nails:)
i used to retail lots of different types of strengtheners....until i learnt the science behind cuticle oil...what geeg said makes so much sense....my clients are converts....however i have always been at the helm cracking the whip to get them in optimum condition!
