"you will need one of the following qualifications:

-*NVQ/VRQ Level 2 Beauty Therapy, CIBTAC Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy, ITEC Level 2 Diploma for Beauty Specialists.
-4 - 5 GCSEs grade A* - C, including English and a subject relevant to your chosen area of study. -Students with full Level 2 vocational qualifications with an overall Merit/Distinction will be considered alongside 2 GCSEs grade A* - C including GCSE English and a good reference.
-some subjects will need GCSE maths.Relevant experience within the industry. Good personal reference demonstrating acceptable level of attendance and commitment to hard work"

i wanted to apply for a level 2 nvq in nail services but strangely I have found a college that lets you go straight into level 3 without a level two. I emailed them and this is the reply I got (in quotation marks) ^

What are your thoughts? Im gobsmacked as I only have gcses and one advanced subsidiary

I don't know, I think the list of what you need is just a list they'll put on all courses. The main thing it says it you either need a level 2 OR 4-5 GCSEs including one that is relevant to your field so unless you have a qual that's relevant to beauty I don't know whether they'll let you on xx

Would a gcse in fine art count since I consider doing nails an art form?

I don't know what level 2 and 3 consists of these days but when I was at college you had to do level 2 first to gain the knowledge to do level 3.
For example level 2 we learnt manicures so for level 3 we knew all about the nail ready to do the nail extension side of things.

Hope this makes sense!

I've recently completed my NVQ2 & NVQ3 (2011-2013)
you would most deffinately need to complete NVQ2 before going on to a 3
Very basicly put level 2 teaches you manicure, pedicure, basic A&P, your Onys, contraindications, contraactions, tips, blending, product placement over 2 (3 if your college was as fab as mine lol) systems, working with clients, reception duties (helps even if home based) and more too.
You need all of this and in the full detail of which its taught before taking on level3.
Level 3 teaches you the chemical side of products, a deeper understanding into them. Airbrushing, efiling, sculpting of gel and acrylic, gel polishes, wraps, competition and catwalk nails working along with hair stylists and fashion folk, 3D and fantasy nails and all on clients. Plus loads more!
Gawd I loved my level 3 :)

I hope that helped a little.

They must want your money!?

I went straight into level 3 nail tech course, no previous experience just GCSE's from 12 years ago!

Mine was a fast-track over 19's only course.

And none of my GCSE's were relevant! Lol

Almost all training establishments will state you have to have a level 2 to do a level 3, (they're the ones that want your money) which isn't strictly true and the awarding body doesn't state that. You do need at least a facial certificate/diploma to do level 3 in beauty so you can complete the facial electrical unit though. There are a few VTCT (and other) accredited training companies that well let you go straight to level 3 if you have the previous experience which is how the award is actually worded, NVQs were designed to be job specific regardless of the area of work e.g care, beauty. I'm an assessor and if you've already completed a lot of the level 2 work on shorter courses, you can just get assessed on those without actually doing the level 2 but it isn't essential, salons may well ask for 2 and 3 though but that doesn't come from the awarding body and while how each awarding body assesses and verifies will differ, the wording of the award for all of them is the same. I'm not saying either option is right or wrong, it's just a myth that you have to do 2 before 3 if you're experienced.

I've just completed a level 3 nail tech course at college without doing a level 2. Hope that helps :)
