Hi there;

Do you experienced Nail Geeks know of any professional strengthening treatments for nails damaged by acrylics? We have a lot of people who come to use after having their nails wrecked at the NSS nail bars or who have picked their acrylics off and are in need of some serious strengthening.

I've just picked all mine off stupidly and my nails are like paper. Ive used the strengthening polishes but the aren't really doing the job. Obviously we've got regular manicures etc but I was wondering if there's anything else out there.

THanks

I have yet to see anything actually work, in terms of treatments, and have spent my money on quite a few different ones.

In my experience, damaged nails are just like damaged hair: they have to be shortened and the damage grown out. Nothing will change what already is (in other words, nothing will re-grow nail plate layers already filed/ripped off, just as nothing actually repairs split ends and they have to be cut off)

But, the application of a quality cuticle oil is helpful in keeping them flexible and less prone to breakage.

Sorry I couldn't have been of more help.

The best strengthening treatment I have come across is OPI's Nail Envy applied every other day with their cuticle oil Avoplex applied twice daily. It is a miracle worker.

I completely agree with Victoria.

Damage as you describe will not be repaired by a nail strengthener no matter how good it is on 'normal' weak nails.

Damage is damage and has to grow out. However the good news is that you can improve the 'look' of damaged nails with some TLC and a good quality Ridge Filler such as CND Ridge Out or similar. Use of Solar Oil every day also aids in flexibility as the nails are growing out to minimise breakage and splitting.

Doing wraps for a client with damaged nails is also a fantastic way to overlay the damaged surface for a few months until the damage grows out. Wraps are thin and flexible and will create a beautiful surface for polish and the client won't even notice the time passing. Good luck.

Sorry I don't mean to be picky but its a bug bear of mine...the nails were not damaged by acrylics....they where damaged by the person who picked them off.

Thank you Bagpuss - I was about to say the same thing.

have you thought about bio Sculpture gel nails? these coat your natural nails, add strength and nutrients to encourage them to grow. they do not damage your natural nail at all x

Gel might also be a solution if your nails in their weakened condition can take the pain

However, your nails are dead tissue and cannot be altered by promises of nutrients that will encourage them to grow. Exercise and a healthy diet will encourage nail growth ... nothing you put on your nails will alter the growth pattern of your nails.

do they still use those claims to sell Bio.......sorry that isn't aimed AT you...it just riles me that people make such statements. ALL systems are acrylic based...and NON can penetrate into the nail...they ALL sit on top and as long as its put on correctly and removed correctly then NON will damage anyones nails...:green:

damage is damage and has to grow out...just like split ends cant be fixed and need to be cut off....you can make the appearance of split ends look better but once you wash those products off the split ends are still there...

Hi there
I have been using Bio Sculpture for five years and I have never heard that they add nutrients - ! Strength yes , it is one of the only gels that rarely burns during application x
I have found it to be great for strengthing nails even if just to grow damage out and then onto regular manicure
x:lol:

As said: there is NO uv gel that can actually 'strenghthen the natural nail".
The condition of the natural nail can not be altered.

HOWEVER, they can appear stronger by 'protecting' the natural nail and 'supporting' it. However, the natural nail itself, and alone is NOT strenghtened by any product.

hth's:hug:

which, if you read the rest of my post, is what I said. And Nails ARE DAMAGED by badly applied acrylics such as those done cheaply with bad products and drills.

What kind of wraps are these? like acrylic overlays in natural nails?

In that case, Perhaps that first sentence should have read "for nails damaged by me picking off the acrylic?

We good nail techs get a little sensitive on this subject. Try to understand.

well this is only a board of professionals, not an advert for prospective clients so i didnt think i'd have to be so carefull about upsetting people. Please, excuse me for my terrible mistake!

Jeeeeees.

No need for sarcasm. It is precisely because we ARE professionals that it is important to us that the consumers who come to this site ... because they do view this site by the thousands every day ... see the real picture and not read things that are incorrect. So why not just let it go nicely because no one was trying to start an argument and no one wants an argument either. We just like things RIGHT.

I would imagine the suggestion was for either fibreglass or silk wraps. These are a resin based system supported with a mesh between layers. They provide a fantastic support for your natural nail as they grow through. Not all techs provide this service so you will need to hunt around for someone in your area if you want to get the wraps put on. Wraps are also excellent for nail repairs.
