Hi Geeks,

I am looking for a bit of advice.

I have had a lady approach me who has a condition called trichotillomania, she really wants extensions.

I feel for this lady but I am really not keen on doing them as I feel it could cause her some damage.

Have any of you had a client with this condition? Have you refused to offer any services to a client with this condition?

I am unsure how severe it is and I do not want to ask her as its rather delicate I imagine but there are different severity of this condition from what I have read.

Any thoughts?

Edit - I do not think my insurance would even cover me for this anyway, I am just looking for any experiences you may have had.

You can choose of you want to do it..

I suffer from this condition and for this reason I don't have eyelash extensions. I don't pull my lashes out it's my eyebrows that I pull out, but if anything didn't feel normal I would pull at them and in that case could damage my lashes.

I wouldn't have hair extensions either for the same reason, she could cause more damage.:irked::cry:

Ok just looked it up, I wouldn't do it x

Just a shot in the dark here, but presumably neither the OP or Zoemarie are qualified hairdressers?

If you were, you'd presumably have a better understanding of what contraindictions are and mean when providing hairdressing services.

I qualified years ago but never carried it through. So no I don't know everything!!! And just researched this now so

I've had this for many years. It's a compulsion for hair pulling (that's why I love my job lol). It can make the lash, brows or whatever hair being pulled weak but I can't see how it would be a contraindications. However, if the root is weak, it won't take the weight if lash extensions for example.

Exactly my point Kim, you're not a hairdresser so you won't know whether it should be classed as a contraindication for certain hair services, and therefore how it affects your insurance cover. Presumably, you'd expect the person you are paying to carry out the service to know, wouldn't you?

Zoemarie, you may be qualified but I can't fathom why you would give someone advise to 'go ahead if she chooses to' when you admit didn't know what the condition was.

This is meant to be a pro hair forum and it's fair enough to post a query because you're not sure about something or would like some ideas/suggestions/feedback etc.

However, I'd like to think that the replies given are from genuine hair pro's based on their knowledge and experience otherwise, you may as well ask your mate in the pub.

I trained 20 years ago and did not continue so no, I am not in the industry.

I did already state that I am not keen on fitting them and I will not fit them. I was looking for others experiences as it is not something anyone has ever approached me with before.

I came here to ask because you all have many years of experience. If we all knew everything, this forum would not exist.

Obviously, I'm blind. You clearly suggest she gets a doctor's note first...

If she decides to maybe do it!! Get a Docters note to say its safe? What's wrong with that? I'm sorry I'm not a know it all? Clearly!!!!! Why do people come on here to make people feel crap???

To the OP, my sister suffers with this and i choose not to fit lash extensions. Hers is severe, she will have all her lashes and within a few days she will have no eyelashes. I just think personally if she has this condition having something else there will only aggrivate it more and make her want to pick at them! Its a shame, i think there are possible treatments, how effective they are i don't know :)

The point is, you shouldn't give advice on a pro hairdressing forum if you don't know what you're talking about. Particularly, where the advice could cause serious harm!

The OP wanted advice from people with experience of dealing with the condition not people playing at hairdressing.

I said I would NOT do it. End of!

we used to have a client with this condition where I used to work, providing your insurance covers it and tensile test has been done doctor agrees and you want to do it then its up to you id also do a couple either side as a test.
however if she is going to pull at them it may not be worth her wasting her money as such. it could help her as her hair might look fuller making her feel better about herself, which was the case for our client, or it could cause her to pull it more as it may agrevate her.
where I used to work our boss was trained to work with hairloss and recovering from treatment etc we did wigs and hair pieces and all sorts so thats possibly why she was ok to go ahead with it ( insurance wise)

I have a client who comes to me for extensions who has this condition. She says that the extensions stop her pulling at her hair. The extensions have actually allowed the hair to grow!

It sounds like it could be great for some people but not others. Either way I think she's best seeing a specialist, someone who is trained in this and fully understand the physical and mental sides of the condition.

I agree sometimes the feeling of something foreign can make it worse, hence I shouldn't have extensions on as I will pick and pull more than normal.

An excellent thread with a lot of good advice that will benefit a lot of Geeks.

Can I remind everyone though that this is a professional Forum, and as such any replies to queries should be factual and correct not supposition or guess work.
I don't understand this "I didn't like to read and run" way of posting....if you don't know the answer, you don't know it, therefore you should just read and run.
Eventually someone else with the valid knowledge and experience will come along, as they have done here.
It is better not to post at all, than post inaccurate information.

Great to see a thought provoking thread about hair extensions, rather than where to buy them cheaply ;)
