Hi everybody,

I was just wondering if anyone has experienced this. I was vegetarian for about two years, and spent lent this past year not eating dairy either or drinking alchohol (except for glass of red wine occasionally). I am now working seafood and lean meat back into my diet, but my nails now have ridges and are much thinner. I had beautiful nails, clients always commented on how healthy they were, etc. I've stopped buffing them and use cuticle oil everyday. I also have lotion on my hands all day at work.

What vitamin do you think I need in my diet? I've been so overwhelmed with the choice of supplements so I haven't taken any.

Any advice?

I swear by Folic acid for Nails, Hair and Skin, hth

Hi, I always had weak nails too
and I started eating a lot of jelly a few months ago only because it was easy on the digestion, and I noticed my nails have become much stronger ,

I also know people that swear by the hair skin and nails supplement too

I've been vegetarian for the last 13 years, as has my partner, and neither of us have weak or thin nails. It sounds like it could be a deficiency but more likely due to an inbalanced diet than a vegetarian or vegan diet. Here's a list I was once given:
  • White lines or spots can be a sign of a zinc or iron deficiency or protein deficiency.
  • Thin flat nails may indicate a B12 deficiency
  • Ridged nails may indicate an iron deficiency
  • Frequent hangnails may indicate a Vitamin C deficiency
  • Yellowish nails may indicate a B12 deficiency or may indicate diabetes, allergies, liver problems

I dare say it's the water content of the jelly that is helping. Thin nails & ridges are also caused by dehydration (+ vitamin deficiencies, as well as aging - guess we're kind of drying out as we get older )...

I would try the folic acid, silica or Hair, Skin & Nails vitamins... and drink plenty of water.

I definatly think it's an imbalance. I didn't mean to imply that a well executed vegetarian diet is un-healthy. The positive changes in my body and how I feel are incredible.

Sounds like I need more iron.

Thanks!
