ive been freelance for 4 years and have alot of loyal clients even though i am part time . A small salon has come up , good location for me and its only got 1 chair and one basin , ive worked out i can do at least 28 hours a week and it is viable , because at the moment i seem to be spending all my time travelling or waiting for colour to develop so i figure it will be more uptime for me . Has anyone got any words of wisdom or caution for me

Hmm. Proceed with caution.
I don't know your circumstances but I would be wary of taking a salon, with no room to grow or expand, for just yourself, if you have restrictions on working full time.
Shops have big overheads, even little shops, and I cant really see the point of paying out for a shop and only opening 28 hours a week.
For what you gain (booking others in while colours are taking) I think you would lose in overheads.

i also plan( ive done the training) to retail wigs, hairpieces and other hair loss solutions(not extensions) and i thought the privacy ( private appointments ) would be quite good

Proceed with caution.
For basically the same reasons.
But, if you can afford to operate on 28 hours a week then go for it.
Alternatively, it could work if you could partner up with someone who, like you, has restricted working hours and could operate on the days you couldn't. (I would LOVE an opportunity like that).

(When you say 'a salon has come up', I'm presuming an empty salon has come up for rent. If you mean that an already operating salon space has come up for you then the above applies but for different reasons :green:)

its a salon i looked at , but at the time circumstances werent good ( my little one was yet to go to nursery) and somebody else took over done it up and is now selling it on for a reasonable price (they are not local people). I already have an existing loyal clientele. I will probaby be able to do more hours a week ,but that is the minimum i can do . I still have to look into it more , estimated income ,rates, overheads etc. Its in a very upmarket area , downside is parking and visability, and the town gets lots of tourists and foot traffic on sundays and specific times of year . I think that its a little out of the way and private could work in my favour , there are only 2 other salons and a barber.

It sounds like you really like the idea so go for it! If you have that much enthusiasm, you're bound to make it work.

If space is a problem, Easydry disposable towels could save you space. You won't need a washing machine, tumble dryer or as much storage space for towels. They have save me so much space in my salon - it's fantastic!
