Hi guys, yes its another waxing question, just from a different person.

Im at Bedford college and coming to my final year of Beauty Therapy Level 2.

I have a wax pot, and can use this fine, but am think of going mobile during the summer till I start my level 3 qualification, hence I would like something easier than a wax pot to take about as I have just got a new car, and have visions of wax all over the place.

I am really torn between the phd waxing system and the clean and easy waxing system. (I think Im more on the side of clean and easy if Im honest but just not 100% sure).

Ive gone through all the links on this site, and well there is for and against for both systems.

Spoke to the tech guy at Ellisons and he recommended phd, but then the fact that the tubes may be hard to squeeze towards the end is a tad off putting.

The tech guy at Ellisons said that there is more waste with the clean and easy system, and that the rollers get cold quickly and the roller head has a tendancy to get stuck. Has anyone ever had that happen?

I spoke to my tutor at college and asked what she personally found better of the two and she said clean and easy. As the phd system can dribble a little when in the holder.

So guys...please can I have your opinions please, because frankly its giving me a headache now.

Don't let it give you a headache!

I can't comment on the PhD but I have used Clean and Easy, and I didn't find it at all wasteful and I've never had a roller head get stuck.

With regard to cartridges cooling down quickly, I would normally pop it back in the heater between applications, so this has never been a problem. And the kit does include a thermal sleeve to help prevent this from happening, but as I said, I personally find it easy enough to pop it in and out of the heater.

If you buy a Clean and Easy kit that comes with cartridges, you could consider switching to another brand when they run out, as they are quite pricey. I like Salon Systems cartridges, available from Salonlines, Ellisons, Beauty Express, Capital etc

Lots of geeks use both PhD and Clean and Easy so hopefully you will get some more replies

I'm currently PhD (thats what I initially trained in) but I am exploring switching to Hive Roller application. I like my Pot & Spatula for Hot wax but find it quite fiddly and I don't have a great relationship with it - we've fallen out a few times.

My problem with PhD is the fact that you can only buy it from one place and use their waxes. Also I think it is more expensive per client (i'll demonstrate in a mo), and with the Hive roller system you can use cartridges from a host of suppliers (including my Cash & Carry in town five mins away) and Perron Riggot's new roller system.

Right, now the costs - keep up with me on this one!

Hive
6pk 80g Tea Tree Creme Wax: £6.95
10g of Tea Tree Creme Wax: £0.144

Pack of 6 Large Heads: £4.95
1 Head: £0.821 (can be used several times with cleaning)

PhD Safewax
15pk 75ml Tea Tree Natural Creme Wax: £22.50
10ml Tea Tree Natural Creme Wax: £0.20

40pk Large Applicators: £8.75
1 Applicator: £0.218

If you assume a roller head can be cleaned and sterilised for multiple client use (at least four per head) then you can see that the roller system is going to work out cheaper per client, and of course you have a wider range of products to choose from. I know here I am comparing g against ml but the sizes are very similar.

Hi ya Zo Zo,

Thanks so much for your reply. I was up till half 2 in the morning umming and aahring about the two systems.

And I couldnt imagine the rollers getting stuck, as the wax is heated properly so why would it happen.

Also thanks for the advice about the cartridges, I think that would have been my next question lol.

Once again thanks, for such a speedy response.

Hi ya Fozzyo,

Thanks for the reply. This did come into my mind, as with phd, you have to buy a phd tube, and as for the costs...maths was never my strongest subject lol, but yer I kinda figured that phd was gonna work out a tad pricey. Ok you can add the cost on to the client, but frankly I'd rather keep the cost down, use a system as good, and have more clients because they can afford it if you get me.

Many thanks for the response.

Just a word of caution about Perron Rigot cartridges... I think they are larger than the Clean and Easy and Hive ones and I don't think they fit in the Clean and Easy heater. I also don't think they fit in the Hive toaster style heaters, but apparently they do fit in the newer style Hive Multi-Pro heaters.

Another word of caution, lol, Salon Systems do two different sizes of cartridge, it's the 75g ones I have used, which is 5g smaller than Clean & Easy, (I think) but they do fit the heater!

The other thing with Clean & Easy / Salon Systems cartridges is, that you can unscrew and top up one from the other, as it's easier to wax with a fuller cartridge than a nearly empty one. I would imagine this is not possible with Phd.

Btw, brilliant calculations Fozzyo!

Edited to add: I think the Perron Rigot cartridges are a bit pricey. I haven't done a calculation but just seeing them on the price list made me relieved I'm a pot and spatula waxer x

Hi ya Zo Zo,

Thanks for the heads up on the cartridges, especially the topping up.

Oh Im so glad I asked the question...because your replies have been really helpfull.

I have used both Phd and roller systems and over all find the roller systems better and easier to use.I came across more problems with the Phd and it seem to take a while to get used to using it effectively and quickly. As i was working for someone else at the time it was a case of just getting on with it but i found it very frustrating for a few weeks.

As has already been said Phd is also the pricier option.I am mobile at the moment and im using the Hive roller wax system but i have also used Clean and Easy in the past.Ive never had any problems with either system and find roller wax in general quick, easy and not messy to use.

Hi ya Kerry,

Thanks very much for the reply. I didnt figure that the roller would stick because I thought I would have found more posts on here saying that other people had experienced problems.

I think I'll have a look up in Sallys and see what roller systems and refills they have on offer ie hive etc, because I would like one like the clean and easy one, that has the fine roller heads too.

Thanks for the response its much appreciated.

Id just like to say thanks to you all for your help. Ive made up my mind, Im going Clean and Easy. More selection with head sizes.

Thanks again, the headache is over.

Faab. When you have it and have given it a some practice let us know how you get on.

Others may not agree but i find the best clean and easy wax the ordinary honey wax i dont find many of the others very nice, especially the green one.

If you keep your rollers nice and clean using a clean one on each client , like of course you should, they will not stick. They get clogged if you dont clean them i know this as i have my own one for use on just me and Gemma ,which i dont clean everytime and it does get sticky.

Jut out of interest exactly 'how' do you clean the head?

I find doing mine really tricky and I don't seem to be getting all the wax out either.

After each client I put a new head on and then clean the used one by first wiping with 'Remove' and a waxing strip, then I apply clean to it with another strip.

Where am I going wrong?:irked:

Have just answered on other thread after wiping over when still hot later i soak in very hot soapy water at end of day then put in barbicide

I read somewhere you can leave the roller in a jar of wax cleaner to dissolve the wax, then rinse and sanitise - barbicide is good for that.
