A couple of weeks ago I waxed my client who I have been waxing for almost 4 years, i waxed her eyebrows, lip, chin and cheeks and i also waxed full arms.
just as ive finished waxing her, one of her cheeks went a bit red and bobbly, she'd never had a reaction with me before so didn't think anything of it.

today i went to wax her sister and she told me that her sister who i had waxed a couple of weeks ago had a very bad skin reaction all over her face and over both arms. luckily her sister is a nurse so she gave her some tablets twice to get rid of it.

i never changed any of the products to what i normally use and over 4 years working on her this has never happened. she was meant to be waxed today but didnt want to have it done as she was scared that she would have another reaction. so because of that now, i've lost a client straight away.

the only medication she is taking is hayfever tablets but a different sort than normal because she has bad asthma so was going to start taking steroids for it but she wasn't on the steroids only the hayfever tablets when i waxed her.

has anyone got any thoughts or comments on why this has happened?? it made me very paranoid when i was waxing today that it would happen again.

Is there not something in hayfever tablets that can affect certain things? I know i cant do any eyelash tint patch tests while someone is on hayfever tablets as it doesn't give a true reading.

Maybe the steroids have stayed in her body if she had taken them fairly recently or could be some other medication she has not told you about.

I waxed someone who i've done loads of times with no problems and last time she had a reaction to it.

I didn't see it so can only take her word for it but she says it looked a bit like eczema. Turns out she was on a cocktail of 7 different tablets a day (including steroids) for a chronic bowel condition that had flared up and that had affected her skin condition. Wish she had told me!

Yes as I have unfortunately found out:irked: the active ingredient in some hay fever medication can affect other things, she just needs to tell you what the active ingredient is so that
1, you can ask new clients and do a patch test, because some peeps won't be affected at all and
2 she can go back to her doctor, which she should anyway and discuss other options with him, anything that has caused her meds to adversely react should be reported rather then avoided for her own sake:hug:

My mum has been taking steroid for years and her skin is paper thin. She cut her leg recently trying on a pair of trousers in a shop!

Always ask waxing clients if they are on steroids and as far as I am aware this is a contraindication to waxing.

Don't lose your confidence over this as it was not anything you did.

I'd say it was her medication. Either that or she's developed an allergy to an igredient in the wax or aftercare. This can happen even though you've been using the same products for years. xxx

thanks everyone, i will tell her bout the hayfever tablets and to ask the doctor bout it. i didn't want her to think it was my fault cos i don't want her to lose confidence in me!

Please don't let this knock your confidence. She must know it isn't your fault as the rash came up where you hadn't waxed. Also, her sister has been back. Be nice and be sympathetice towards her but don't go on about it or you could convince her that it was your fault.

Waxing is the only salon service where people pay us to inflict pain on them, so you must toughen up and take it in your stride. Waxers are fearless!

Sounds like you're doing a great job.

ahh thanks!:)

I agree with Kim, this was most probably a medication issue and we can most definitely become allergic to anything at any time. This was not your fault at all so don't feel bad. Use the experience to learn! We all need these experiences to advance our own knowledge!

Love and best wishes

Sheila

If the client is a regular waxer and she was taking hayfever tablets would you say no to waxing or are there exceptions?

I'm confused!! Aren't hayfever tablets anti-histamines? Infact we can recommend them to someone who has had a reaction to waxing because of this?

If we started to refuse every hay fever sufferer we'd all lose half of our clients! I have been taking hay fever tablets for years and like I said a far a I am aware they would help a reaction, not cause one.
