Hi I wondered if anyone could help shed some light....my friend came to visit me today and showed me her nails..shes been having a few problems with them, but she's not sure and neither am I whats up with them.........
the proximal fold around the base of her nails are inflamed..they didn't look particularly red but just a little and the eponychium is very cracked...

she hasnt had any enhancements on for a while and she said she hasnt cut them or poked them or anything like that, all shes done is wear clear polish and she says that when shes removed it (with acetone remover)...within 24 hours the skin of the proximal nail fold is extremely extremely itchy.

Does anyone know why this might be happening?

Looks a bit like paronychia and if she doesnt get it sorted it could get worse/infected

Paronychia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

best to take a trip to the docs to be sure.

She could be allergic to the acetone in the remover when she removes the clear polish.

I'd keep them clear of ANYTHING and oil them and see what happens

Yes I was just looking through my book and thought it looks like paronychia... but it doesnt say a lot about it...it says its a bacterial infection...so does that mean you would probably only get paronychia on a few nails rather than all of them? All of hers are inflamed...some more than others....hmmm confused...thanx for your help.

My auntie has eczema and it has caused her fingers and nails to do the same.

Its made all her nails uneven and deeply ridged.

Doc's just give her cream to apply day/night. Its doesn't really help, just makes them not look so dry.

Its funny you should say that....she did mention she suffers with a bit of eczema, and i did notice some of her nails had vertical ridges...maybe this could be whats happening...maybe the acetone is aggravating it?

if its only a mild case....then she goes over it with acetone YES it will aggravate it.
