Trained as hair dresser at night school for 3 years at the age of 21. Last year trained in waxing and this year have trained in eyelashes and spray tanning. Helpful, positive, enthusiastic, friendly, trustworthy.

What other interests do you have besides this work or this industry?
My family and friends, my dogs, reading, cooking, socialising with friends and basically enjoying life!

Thanks for sharing, everybody!
I've been on SG for just over a year.
After studying Drama and English I became a teacher of English at secondary level. When my children were little I moved into primary, and eventually became a Headteacher.
I loved being in education, but went back to school myself and trained at a local college in beauty therapy. I nearly gave up after the first week as for the first time in my life I felt really old compared to those around me, and felt like a fish out of water......went home and cried! So glad I carried on; I soon settled in and made some great friends, two of whom I now work with!
My worst features are:
I have an opinion on everything- and not always a well-informed one- and feel obliged to share it (Oops! You may have noticed that!) Also, I love debate and will sometimes argue for arguments' sake.
I hate prejudice, but can be very prejudiced myself, eg when someone says they haven't read a book since they left school - I can't imagine a life without books.
I love people but I have to rein in a tendency to gossip.
I find it difficult to admit to my emotions.
My best features are:
I will happily take the proverbial out of myself, and don't mind other people doing so. (My photo is supposed to be posily ironic)
I can be very brave, eg I will stand up to bullies.
I'm very approachable (scarily so at times!)
Like most people I've had very sad times in my life but I have the ability to bounce back and believe in carpe diem.

How long have you been on geek?
Since Aug 2007

How did you find your way here?
I think it was another oldie Maguire introduced me to the world of geek, when I was on myspace

What is your job now?
Education Ambassador for CND, And Nail salon owner
IAre you involved with any pro companies?
CND

What is your career background?
I originally worked in insurance and hated being stuck in an office, on the phone all day. I decided on a career change when a friend asked me to polish her nails and do nail art on them, And found I thouroughly enjoyed it and took the next step to becoming a nail professional.
Trained originally in 2006 with the Carlton institute in Windsor and was very dissapointed, Found geek and learnt about other companies and did conversions before finally finding CND. Completed my masters in February this year and became a full EA in may this year winning 3 awards.

What's your plans for the future?
To continue sharing my passion for an amazing brand to anyone who will listen and those who share the same passion.
To become the best that I can be

What kind of person are you?
Very hot headed at times, extremely passionate about things I love and people I love I can occasionally be a little loud and tend to open my moth before engaging my brain, but it's only when I am passionate about something. I like to have fun and since becoming a nail professional have no time to be ill or let things get me down.

What other interests do you have besides this work or this industry?
Not a lot, I love my JOB I eat, sleep and talk nails till the cow's come home, but if I had to think of something else it would be my family and dog who is now an old man and going greyer by the day.
I love to read, can't get enough of it and like Fiona, Martina cole, Karin Slaughter, Patricia Cornwell, Steven King, James Pattinson they are afew others but you get the gist.
And holidaying with good friends and my Hubby.

Oh yeah and my name is Jen xx

Oooo my turn....

How long have you been on geek?
Around a bout a year (ish)

How did you find your way here?
Just searching for some help and came across all the amazing folks on here

What is your job now?
I still do a full time office job and am just working evenings and weekends to build up clients and the money is helping out towards my wedding. I do gel nail enhancements, spray tanning and lash enhancements.

Are you involved with any pro companies?
Nope

What is your career background?
I have always worked in an office since I finished my A levels. I'm very good at what I do but that doesn't mean I enjoy it...so I thought I'd make a change and go for nails so took a course. Then one things led to another and I've started adding more services and I'm loving it! When I eventually leave my office job (needing the income at the moment) I can't see me ever going back. I also have another 'mini' business called the sweet case. I supply a few local shops with old fashioned sweets and small sweet hampers - no idea where this all came from but it's working out for me at the moment :)

What's your plans for the future?
I want to leave my office job behind and progress with what I love. I want to train in waxing & massage to add to my services and do this full time.

What kind of person are you?
I was a shy person but I've become much more confident through the beauty world :) Much more outgoing and talkative now :)

What other interests do you have besides this work or this industry?
We have a family farm which myself and hubby to be work on regularly with my folks. I've always grown up with the farm but he's a 'towny' so it's been quite funny teaching him and I love the fact that he now calls himself 'Farmer Shears'! As I mentioned I also have a sweets business which I like doing (and yes occassionally I do have to check the sweets are OK by tasting them!).

How long have you been on geek?

A year, joined Aug 2010.

How did you find your way here?

Through Google.

What is your job now?

Right now I am a full time Mummy. Waiting to find out if I've got a job. But I do friends and family's hair a training prices just to keep my skills.

Are you involved with any pro companies?

No.

What is your career background?

Left school in '05, applied for Hairdressing courses but they were so over subscribed could never get on one. So done a buisness and administration course while I waited for a place. started working in a salon as a voluntary junior in summer 06. In '07 finally found an apprenticeship course and was finally on my way to becoming a hairdresser.
I am now Level 3 qualified.

Whats your plans for the future?

My short term plans are to get back into a salon and build on my skills and client base.
Long term I would love my own salon.

What kind of person are you?

I'm so shy when you first meet me, very wary of who I let into my life, but after a while I do come out of my shell.
I hate confruntation. (sp?)
I am a total daydreamer, spend most of my days in my own little world.

What other interests do you have besides this work or this industry?

Totally family girl, most things I do are with my mam, sis, fiance or daughter.
I love reading, nothing better than chilling out with a good book or magazine.
Used to love going to theme parks, really into white knuckle rides.
I eat out alot, love trying new restaurants.

Oh and my name's Lauren. :D

I'm also known as Debbie, username taggyboy is named after my 18 year old cat who we had to be put down 2 Xmas' ago, oh and I'm a Leo.

Very impressed to see how many of us worked with telex machines. I also worked a PBX switchboard. For those who don't know what one of those was, it was a huge telephone answering machine that calls went through via an operator and were connected by cords and plugs and lights.

So enjoying reading this thread and get a real feel for the people behind the computer.

Oh I must join in - I have used a telex and a PABX plug & lamp switchboard!! lol

How long have you been on geek?
More or less since it first started but went away and came back again with a new user name.

How did you find your way here?
Can't remember, next question

What is your job now?
Have 'Nails at Home' which is a salon in summer house at the end of the garden and some mobile.

Are you involved with any pro companies?
Not yet but would love to be an eductor for CND someday

What is your career background?
Mostly hotels but in 2003 decided to go for nails. Started Nails at Home Ltd did all my training up to NVQ converted to Creative and got loads of certificates and CND Masters. Did L&P then added Gel (Brisa) but got really bad shoulder pain through buffing so gave it all up. Went back to hotels and was Director of Sales & Marketing for a Marriott Hotel then the hotel was sold and I got made redundant. Found Shellac and was impressed with the 'no buffing' because of my shoulder (still hurting after 6 years) (also hence my user name, lol) So re-vamped Nails at Home and now do Shellac and manicures. Had a shoulder operation in June so am looking forward to getting rid of the pain for good as soon as it is all healed. (Hasn't stopped me doing nails while I am healing though!)

Whats your plans for the future?
Keep my eyes and ears open, and to keep learning.

What kind of person are you?
Friendly (hoping to say hello to alot of fellow techies at Olympia. Knowledgeable (like to be the best so never stop learning). My best friend is my hubby. Love, love, love doing nails!

What other interests do you have besides this work or this industry?
Have a boat on the Thames - good for chilling out at weekends. Love painting/art. Love cats.

Thanks for reading.

I'm quite surprised after reading this thread how many "oldies" there are. Not on SG necessarily but age wise...half centurions+. Divide and conquer! Just kidding.

The oldies are the best !!!

Aww this is such a fab thread so lovely to be able to actually hear some personality behind the posts!

How long have you been on geek?
It's probably been since the begining of the year (2011) or late 2010

How did you find your way here?
I was looking for advice on how to convince somebody to employ me!

What is your job now?
Hotel recetptionist

Involved with any pro companies?
Nope

Is your career background?
It's a small and boring one I'm afraid. My first job ws in a hairdressers as a Saturday girl, The hairdressers also had a small back room for beauty...I was hooked and fasinated! Then took part in work experience where I shadowed for two weeks and decided from the age of about 14 that i wanted to spend my future in beauty. I then sadly had to leave my salon post as the salon closed and I never retook a position as I had GCSE's ect to study for. After leaving school I enrolled at my college and did my NVQ2 & 3. Aswell as holistics (which I never go on with) and introduction to business management while working in my mums friends office (Where I learnt administration) and in a hairdressing salon as a receptionist. With two part time jobs which were running me into the ground and myself and my partner moving in together it called for a small career change into the hotel industry which is fine, but you get no thanks and no job satification for little pay and awkward hours so I decided to set up a small mobile spray tanning business for friends and family which keeps me busy most days off and evenings.

What's your plans for the future?
I've decided lately to do a degree in business managment as something to fall back on as even with all my hard work and skill I've no "real" "experience" accourding to salon owners and as I love false tannning ect I'm thinking of transferring my skills into working from the comapany and manufacturing end (so if anyone's searching I'M HERE) lol

What kind of person are you?
Extremly laid back, brilliant in an emergency. Bubbily and chatty. I'd say I put others first and would rather listen than moan but I've small person sydrome where I stew on issues then explode into almighty hell!

What other interests do you have besides this work or this industry?
Well I've covered my business interests, but I pole dance and have to for the past year now it's brilliant and addictive and sooo much fun. I love to buy clothes and my friends often go places and can't find anything for themselves but return home to tell me there's a dress for me in topshop as I now have such a obvious fashion sense! (even my nan buys for me!) I love my boyfriend dearly and bless him he always gets my whines and grinds as well as all my rubbish cooking skills. I really am lucky with him even though i don't tell him enough

How long have you been on geek?
I joined in about June but I have been lurking for a while before.

How did you find your way here?
I really cant remember!

What is your job now?
5 weeks ago I went self employed :) I rent a room above a hair salon. It's really challenging but I'm loving every minute of it. I'm a beauty therapist and make-up artist and newly trained acrylic nail tech bit there is much more still to learn!

Are you involved with any pro companies?
No

What is your career background?
Well I started working in customer service when I was 17. I went to college and did an AS level in Sociology and an A level in law...
At the age of 20 I was working a 60 hour week as assistant manager of a very large restaurant and it was making me ill. After a trip to the doctors I knew I had to do something else and that's when I started to train the beauty industry.

Whats your plans for the future?
To get loads and loads of clients and make a huge success of my business! :) and to do all the training I wish I could afford now.

What kind of person are you?
I'm really bubbly, I'm extremely caring and sympathetic, and at the moment (due to stress of opening a new business) I'm very emotional! I'm hoping to be back to my normal happy self soon!

What other interests do you have besides this work or this industry?
Umm...well this might sound strange for a girly girl but motorbike racing. I have friends that ride in the British Superbikes and I am frequently seen in hot pants and high heels promoting the team and being a 'grid girl'. I love my weekend 'job'.

Well that's me, and my name is Rhiannon xx

Im not sure what brought me into beauty, but now im here i love it!
Whats your plans for the future?

What kind of person are you?
Broad-minded, fun loving essex girl! Honest & straight talking (sometimes too much!) Spontaneous. Confident- many may say arrogant! Emotional barriers, explosive sometimes! Driven by ambition, apparently self-centered. Require motivation rarely, need own space frequently! Put my foot in it from time to time, though seldom apologise because i usually meant what i said, but get the way i said it wrong! Need to be kept on my toes!..Though deep inside there's a soft girl... if you get deep enough to find her, be careful that you dont get lost in all the madness that is her!...
What other interests do you have besides this work or this industry?
i love the beach, reading, i have a love for designer bags.
Oh & i love biting the ends of twix bars and then sucking tea up them until they go all soggy! penquins make good tea straws too!

I've been on Geek since 2007, before I qualified in 2008, I think I found my way here through the Google God :), I'm self employed as a 'Beauty Technician' - nails, tanning & waxing, and Hairdresser (I class myself as a Technician because I'm not qualified in enough to call myself a Therapist - although I'm considering adding 'counsellor' to the job description, lol).

I'm not involved with any pro companies, done loads in my time including petrol pump attendant, alzheimers nurse and telesales and although initially I wanted my own 'high street' salon, I'm actually very happy working from home and tbh I have known enough people in the industry who have had their own salons with staff and its more hassle than its worth.

I think I'm caring and compassionate but at the same time can be quite selfish (that's the Aries in me )! I'll do anything for anyone, but don't cross me or you'll know about it!

I love to bake cakes and cupcakes and dabble in website stuff, but my passion is jewellery making. I don't bead though, I'm too impatient for that, lol, I usually make from sterling wire, mainly wire wrapping using beads as accents but I have made pendants and bangles from wire coat hangers and my latest bracelet is made from metal washers :D

I sell my handmade jewellery through word of mouth mainly, and facebook, am always learning new techniques and taking classes, and I am about to start holding jewellery making workshops from home which I hope will inspire other people who think they can't into knowing they can!

So that's me really :D xx

Hi my name is Rachel

I own a hair & beauty salon in a small ex mining village in Sheffield
I have owned my salon for 6 years now and still love it just as much as the first day I opened.

Google sent me towards salon geek in 2007. I have only just recently started posting, think I was a little nervous at first after reading some of the threads

Before I trained in 2002 I worked for a big firm of solicitors in the accounts department. I ran a team of 3 at the tender age of 18 but because I was a chatter box I was always in trouble ! It's a good job I worked hard. Whilst there I trained as a book keeper, accounts assistant and now finishing this section of my life by studying towards being a chartered accountant.

My love is the salon but I have to finish what I started all those years ago

Between studying and working, I look after my 2 gorgeous boys Oliver 3 and Thomas 1 along with my alaskan malamute

I am a busy girl but wouldn't change one thing in my life
