First of all- great thread! It is so nice to make the "geeking" a bit more personal :)

How long have you been on geek?
I started last month- and got already addicted!

How did you find your way here?
I've been desperately looking for wise people who can share their knowledge and experience.

What is your job now?
I am a full time PA and after hours mobile therapist. I have started recently and finding it very VERY hard.

Are you involved with any pro companies?
Nope :)

What is your career background?
After I finished university of economics in Poland I came to England. That was 5 years ago and since then I worked as a bar tender on Brighton Pier :), manager in couple of hotels, personal banker in a high street bank and now I am a PA working for one of the biggest organisations in England. I am very proud of what I achieved although it was a very lonely journey... and still is. I have a fabulous husband who supports me all the way therough my life but unfotunately no friends. I've been changing workplaces very often and I am very ambitious which makes people sometimes very jealous. My husband's family doesn't accept me- the whole thing of me being a foreigner is a bit too much for them :) Bless them. So that adds a bit to my loneliness.
I've been doing Reiki for 15 years and last year I did massage qualifications and now I am mastering my nails skills :) And I am loving it!!! I struggle with finding time but I say to myself that that's only a transitional stage of life and I will sonner than later become full time therpist.

Whats your plans for the future?
Get my business up and running as I absolutely love looking after people and carying for them. I love massage, nails, reiki- it's just fabulous and I am very passionate about it! I don't plan having kids tho!

What kind of person are you?
Very withdrawn, very lonely, pretending to be super strong but jelly inside :) Pretending to be bubbly as I am affraid of people thinking that I am boring. Oh gosh- I think I am now writing a diary here :) I don't show real me much because I prefere people thinking that I am strong and have no problems or worries at all :) And that I think puts people off me. But I know that if someone want's to know me better they will not be put off by my attitude.

What other interests do you have besides this work or this industry?
Well... I work about 10 to 12 hours a day and on top of it I cook every day, look after house, cat and husband, do shopping, promote my business, do the therapies etc. and try to squeeze time to get in touch with my family. But I go on the gym twice a week which keeps me sane :) I used to love dance but I don't have anyone here to go out with so that's gone through the window :)

That was almost like a psychotherapy :)

APOLOGIES FOR GRAMA AND SPELLING- I AM A 'BLOODY FOREIGNER' :)

That reads so sad sunshineinme :(

from Debbie's HTC Sense

Sunshineme, we are your friends. We don't care if your jelly inside or hard on the outside. Be yourself, to be as ambitious as you and to live like you do you are stronger than you think. Big hugs from your new friend x x x

Bless you. I hate to hear people say that kind of thing about people who are not born on english soil, its so narrow minded and ignorant. I have several Polish and 2 Ukranian clients in my log, plus many clients from various other parts of the world and they are all most loyal clients, its the Brits that cause me the most hassle. When people say that in future, just remind them that our "beloved" Royal Family are all half German and many of us desended from Vikings.

Anyway lol, I digress.
Its hard making friends when you already feel like an outsider to your loved ones, i know how that feels believe me. The best thing to do is always stay true to yourself hon, sometimes people can tell when a person is "putting on a show" so to speak, and it can make them wary of you. I am sure you aren't boring, people can just be ignorant when it comes to the unfamiliar. They can also feel threatened by intelligent, successful people, especially if they aren't. I suggest you just allow the real you to shine through and to hell with those who don't like it, its their problem, not yours.

Hope i've not waffled on too much lol x

You are clearly a highly articulate and intelligent person, both intellectually and emotionally.
You are brave and bold, coming to a foreign land where, sadly, not all of the natives are friendly.......but most of us are, and we welcome you very much xx

How long have you been on geek?

Oh my word - i had to check my prifle and it has been 2 years :D

How did you find your way here?

Good old Google ;)

What is your job now?

Full time mum, qualified in nail enhancements but rarely work because we live in a real remote area :( Am also a carer for my husband who is not so good with his health :(

Are you involved with any pro companies?

Nope :D

What is your career background?

Errr haven't got one as such. I started because I had a passion for nails and was sick of paying a average tech £40 every week because I like my nails different all the time. She didn't offer forever french or extend the nail beds, just stuck a white or cheaply bought glitter tip on with clear over the top. Got sick of it in the end.

Whats your plans for the future?

Oh word - I don't even know what my plans for tomorrow are mos of the time! i want to learn more, I am qualified in Psychology to A level and can use that as points off a degree so forensic psychology is very tempting for me. I also want to study marine biology from home along with considering hairdresing NVQ level 2 so I can go into hair extensions also. I love to learn, read and soak up information and generally once I learn something I move onto something else ( am like an education parasite but in a good way haha ) so the pyschology and MB would be more as a mind worker than a career choice :D

What kind of person are you?

Quite erratic, laid back, open minded but I am also fiercely jealous and a typical Scorpio. I love my husband and family and am very protective of them, I like to think I am creative - I can usually turn my hand tomost things where it involved making things from building a wall, digging a pond, decorating right through to making corsets and wedding gowns etc I am a bit of a boffin and will read and read about things until I can have an informed opinion on them and until I feel I have learnt enough about a vcertain thing. I am quite obsessive too and have an addictice personality :D

What other interests do you have besides this work or this industry?

Psychology, marine biology, fish keeping - I have marine, cold and tropical, reading, forensic psychology, fashion design, music, gardening and my wonderful family :D

Where is the icon that represents the biggest hug in the christendom :) ?:hug::hug::hug::hug: to EVERYONE!!!!

Sushineineme, my name is Tammie (AKA gr8nailz). Isolation is a horrible thing and being so far from your family makes your isolation feel twice as bad. Although we are a forum of professionals, you've already gotten a "little taste" that we are a giant family reaching to embrace you from all over the world. Yes, we're here to ask and answer questions, bounce ideas off of each other, share information and our art. But we also have ears for you to bend and broad shoulders to help carry a burden. Just ask...we're here.

Welcome to our family.

How long have you been on geek?

Iv been on SG for over a year now

How did you find your way here?

Again, good ole Google, cant even remember what I was googling, but it led me here and I never left :D

What is your job now?

I have a home salon in Essex. I specialise in Semi Perm Eyelash Extensions which is my true passion, absolutely love love love them, I also have a large clientele for Shellac, Minx, Threading and Spray Tanning

Are you involved with any pro companies?
No

What is your career background?

Career background very very boring, secretarial for many years, then left to have my two beautiful girls, stay at home mum for a number of years, then set up a little ironing business - nope I dont love ironing lol, absolutely hate it, however, my hubby told me I wasnt allowed a new convertible beetle (which I was hankering after) so I started the business, saved every penny and 3 years later bought myself a brand spanking new convertible cream beetle. Just goes to show you can do whatever it takes if you put your mind to it!!!!

I kind of fell into Beauty eeeep, for my 40th birthday my hubby and mum paid half each for me to do a Semi Perm EE course, I was only intending to do it for "fun" yes, I was one of "those" dreaded people, did the course early in the year (birthday was later in the year) and loved it, forgot that I was the type of person that felt the need to make things work lol, hadnt planned on setting up a business but it just kind of happened, added treatments along the way and here I am :suprised:

Whats your plans for the future?

Setting up my new home salon, I would like to do my PTLLS in order to teach people "properly" how to do EE!!!! Too many one day courses with your cert at the end of the day and nobody knowing what they are meant to be doing eeeep (sorry, bug bear, I get too many clients with mangled lashes)!!

What kind of person are you?

LOL I dont know, best ask my geeky friends :D although you will get a good idea about me from my geeky blogs :o

What other interests do you have besides this work or this industry?

My gorgeous girls, aged 8 and 10, wonderful hubby (most of the time) been married for 13 years, could have been out in 8!!!!!! (sorry private joke my grandad always said, if he got put away for murder he could have been out of prison in 8 years...probably longer in real life but that was the joke) Walking our dog Beans, dont really have any time for other interests, oooo how sad :D

On a side note, I have made a HUGE amount of friends on SG, amazing amazing people, some of those people have become my most trusted friends who know EVERYTHING about me, never judge me and still love me :o

Tammie, thank you so much!

I think I was very lucky to find this forum and become a part of it. I go here several times every day, read about everyone's lives, problems, challenges and successes. It really is a way for me of learning not only about the industry but also about people. I think I really missed some interaction and meeting new people. Even though it's online it means a lot to me! I am a real salongeek addict :)

And i think there are here real characters and individuals :) Xxxx

Sunshine this site does the same for me. I moved last year from my birth place to a little village 200 miles away from my family and friends. There are virtually no people here for me to speak to, the mums at the bus stop are very clicky with one another and as yet I am still waiting to feel like i fit in.

Salon Geek lets me speak to people who "get" me, share my interests and make me feel that there are people in my life who care how i am feeling and how I am doing :D xx

How long have you been on geek?
I joined the site in December 2010, after being an avid reader for a few months.

How did you find your way here?
Via a google search for 'Beauty training'

What is your job now?
I work as a Retail and Business Development Manager for a well known insurance provider, the 'We can be Bothered' people.

Are you involved with any pro companies?
No, not at the moment, but would not rule it out for the future.

What is your career background?
After training as a Chef at college (which I did not pursue) I worked as a Support Worker for people with learning disabilities and mental health issue. I then worked for a few years running an Artist Management and Promotions company with an ex partner.

Whats your plans for the future?
I would ideally like to work part time as a Beauty Therapist (when my college course finishes). My long term plan is to open a small home salon in the basement of my house in Spain (when me and my partner move out there).

What kind of person are you?
Pretty 'happy go lucky' loyal, and caring, but am not one to cross if you hurt a loved one!

What other interests do you have besides this work or this industry?
I love live music and am getting into gardening :)

Thank you very much for this great thread OP!

I love this thread... my name is Karen and I'm Irish.

How long have you been on geek?
Since 2008... that's when I got my new lap top from Santa :)

How did you find your way here?
Google

What is your job now?
Shellac Education Ambassador and Salon Owner

Are you involved with any pro companies?
CND

What is your career background?
I used to work in an office... my job was varied and I dealt with insurance, switch board, customer accounts, bad debts and complaints (they were my speciality :))
I was always interested in Nails and used to sculpt nails when I was about 8 with blue tac and then paint them red. (as you do)

I left the office and opened a Small Nail Salon over 9 years ago and went on to own a large Beauty Salon and win a few awards for Nails (best day of my life)

What's your plans for the future?
I’m keen to contribute in a positive way to our industry and being part of the CND team, working with the best products on the market is a fantastic opportunity. I’m very excited for the future and am extremely passionate about nails – education and continuous learning and enhancing/ honing skills is crucial. I'm looking forward to sharing my knowledge, experience and skills with other Nail Professionals.

What kind of person are you?
I'm a bit mad really... I never take life too seriously and like to have a laugh. I constantly launch into different accents without even realising and I just like to have fun. I hate confrontation and will do anything to avoid it. I'm a hard worker and I'm passionate about my job. I love my family and friends and would walk over hot coals for them.

What other interests do you have besides this work or this industry?
This is gonna sound sad, but I love watching Telly... love to Geek and love to read. Of course I love to spend time with my little boy who is 5 now.

That's it really... oh and of course I LOVE Angels! :)
