Hey, those of us who knew how to operate them were crazy cool and had mad skills.

Oh yes, I remember them as well and those silly carbon rolls that always needed changing.

Funny you say that my Dad said "you'll go far in telecommunications girl". It certainly was a specialised skill

I see, thanks for explaining it to me, sorry for stearing the thread off course but I couldn't help asking lol.

gr8nailz - I had an american friend at uni who used to say I had mad skills because I could drive a car with gears

It's so nice to hear about the people behind the usernames :) and also get an education in technology of years gone by :D

So I guess I'll share about me too!

I'm 33 and a stay at home mum to 4 kids aged 7-12.

I've always helped out in the school doing fun in the classroom days, supervising school trips and generally just being on hand if they needed some help.

Anyway, as a reward for myself and a few other mammies who helped out, the school organised an 8 week pamper session for us. So one day a week we had a therapist come to the school and do various treatments. I debated so hard on the first day whether to go or not. I'm not (well wasn't) a girlie girl at all. Jeans, runners, pony tail no make up was me.

4 kids and running a house didn't leave a lot of ME time LOL

First week there was 8 of us, second week only 2 came back, week 3 and it was just me. The therapist was a trainer in the nearby college and over the weeks we did alot of chatting. She had noticed a change in me each week and it was nice. Others had noticed it too. She suggested I apply for the course and the deadline was only a few days away. I applied that evening.

Doing that course was the BEST thing I have done, it opened up a huge and exciting new world to me. I earned Distinctions on my classes and I was so proud of myself.

I never ever half ass do things and being a beauty therapist and nail technician will be no different.

The only thing I do need to work on is confidence :)

Holy poop that was longer than I thought LOL

How long have you been on geek?

Been on here since 2010

How did you find your way here?

Seen it on a few Google searches then recommended by a dear friend from Primary School that I got back in touch with on Facebook that is an Aesthetician if that's how you spell it and now has her own Spa

What is your job now?

I am a fully qualified self-employed beauty therapist, nail technician and make-up artist and full time mum

Are you involved with any pro companies?

Nope but wouldn't rule it out one day, if they'll have me :D

What is your career background?

Customer service/admin/sales ad nauseum

Whats your plans for the future?

Hmm, well following getting married in 16 days, then spending 2 days out working alongside my mobile/home salon business, just focusing on raising my 2 year old, learning to chill out a bit more, staying on top of my skills and building upon them, saving up some moneta, and having my own salon one day

Or win the lotto

Or get a recording contract and release a blockbusting album that the World and his dog will buy

What kind of person are you?

A Libran, I hate injustice at any level and fight it to the death but generally a relatively normal if not slightly OCD where tidying is concerned 33 year old

Hate anyone taking the p and I do try to help anyone out, bit of a soft touch in this department really. I tend to take in all the waifs and strays and mummy them

I do have what I call a healthy sense of humour, bit of a joker in my pack really but it's all harmless fun...

What other interests do you have besides this work or this industry?

Creative writing, cooking

Also enjoy socialising, travelling, computing/gaming, music/concerts, reading, cinema, watching Manchester United and Formula 1

It's so fantastic to finally meet the people behind the screen names!

How long have you been on geek?
Just over a year, lurked for a while before signing up

How did you find your way here?
No idea

What is your job now?
Team Secretary for one of the big investment banks in central London looking after 12 bankers. *groan*. But shall be starting out doing nails shortly. Once I get confident enough.

Are you involved with any pro companies?
no

What is your career background?
Being a dogs body for various financial companies. Urgh. Although I have a degree in footwear design, am NVQ in photography and now my CND foundation. Oh and a qualification in Project Management.

Whats your plans for the future?
Become mobile, and once I cam afford to give up my office job and have established a client base then i want to have a dedicated beauty room or rent a room in a salon. (other beauty treatments are on my to do list)

Also to overcome and beat my depression/BPD and be happy and content with myself.

What kind of person are you?
A bit quirky, 50s rockabilly vintage throwback, shy until I get to know ppl, unless they're very chatty themselves, very conscientious in EVERTHINH, creative, perfectionist...do anything for my nearest and dearest...childlike and giggly at times....too forgiving...and I'm a hoarder of shoes and clothes (400 pairs! Eeeek)

What other interests do you have besides this work or this industry?
Loads....collecting vintage 40s/50s clothes, shoes, handbags, jewellery and interior pieces,(my wardrobe is devoted to my vintage stuff....very Marilyn and sparkly!) I'm also a roller derby gal (aka Lil Red Rockin' Hood), I have a keen interest in photography and digital editing, and I do freelance vintage hairstyling from time to time with Lipstick and Curls....think that's it! And I do a bit of singing and am in the process of getting a 50s rhythm n blues band together! Busy gal me! Some of that will have to go when I become a pro in beauty!! Lol!! :D

Hi I am Laura and have been registered since October 2009. I initially tried Essential Nails (have the nail trainer to prove it oh yes and the course minus a few parts, still in the box) I've learnt I need a real living breathing trainer.... so still no enhacements qualification and I stepped away from the site until January this year. I'm now loving natural nails and can't believe how lucky I am to have an in road in the nail world :)

I have had various jobs over the years from a travel agent (that never got to travel on my YTS scheme money) to a secretary where I fell into payroll and did the whole girl about town thing in London for companies such as Harvey Nicholls, Thompsons Holidays, Nottinghill Housing Trust and then list goes on. When I was preggers with my gorgeous boy I decided London office work wasnt for me so took a small part time job at Orange in Bluewater. I had my baby boy and stopped working but wanted to follow my dream of working in a nursery, so armed with my pencil case and my little boy I enrolled into college. I got my qualification and then moved to Margate in 2007 and got my first proper paying nursery job which certainly had me hitting the ground running. Within 2 months I was promoted to assistant supervisor though really the supervisor as there wasnt one lol! After realising child care certainly wasnt what I expected sadly and the fact that I couldnt get the work/life balance right with my husband and son I left there a couple of years later. Now I am on the road to THE most exciting thing I have ever done for myself..... nails.

I love this site and found it whilst searching for information on courses (and yes I still went for essential nails :o) but this is like my addiction.

I have diagnosed OCD (lol actually wrote CND first there!!) and whilst some days its miserable I love it for when I want to get something done and learn as much as I want to..... I'm OCD-ing about nails and for once I love it!

I'm currently setting up my mobile nail business and having so much fun with Shellac.

The sort of person I am (or maybe thats l think amd hope I am) caring, considerate, have a wicked temper once ignited, happy, optimistic, can laugh at myself (and frequently do..... the only other option would be ending in a messy wet puddle of tears ha ha) and hopefully kind.

My interests outside nails..... christ do I have any lately...... no I love reading crime novels (tried to write one myself and still cringe now when I reread it), any film/tv that includes Idris Elba, Denzil Washington, Mark Ruffalo, Matthew Fox, Leonardo DiCaprio, Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhall. I have an obsession with the Lost box set (cannot count the amount of times on two hands I have watched it). I also love The Beatles (spent a whole summer when I was 14 driving my sister wild with Hard Days Night film quotes), The Rolling Stones, any kinda music that makes me smile and Chas n Dave...... have seen them twice and got kissed by Chas. I also used to be a Drum n Base raver!!!

What kind of person are you?

What other interests do you have besides this work or this industry?
gardening, animals, geology, economics, politics, playing the stock market.

I know that we have the introductions section here (that has loads of threads and is mostly peoples first post) and have our profiles, but it seems that now might be a nice time to get to know a bit about each other, our backgrounds, our work, our time on Salon Geek etc.

There have been other threads like it in the past but they were long ago and thousands of members have probably passed through since then.

As there are new members all the time, some do introduce to tell about themselves but sometimes they dont get to learn about other members too well.

So here is the place to give people a run down of anything you want them to know, For example (and peeps dont have to answer these questions or treat it like a questionnaire)

I hope that this might give us a chance to get to know about each other in a professional and personal way.

It doesnt matter if you have been in the industry 40 years and here since day dot, or joined yesterday and are only considering the industry. Let us know a bit about you and anything you'd like to share.

Just a fun thread to share with each other, keep it positive and light :)

I am Natalie, I work from home and based in Notts.

I hold nvq level 3 in beauty, vtct dips in aromatherapy and stone therapy and have trained with NSI in acrylic and gel nails. I have also done lots of other short courses including intimate waxing, lash fx, fake bake and Sparitual body treatments.

I have been a member on here for about 4 years but only recently started using it.

Aside from my love for this industry, I also have an interest in interior design, I can make hand made soft furnishings, I like to read and would love to write a book myself some day. I am also a big fan of Madonna and I have 4 cats whom I adore.

I'm not married and have no children and not likely to be what with only seeing women all day every day, but at least I get a double bed to myself lol.

i'm a bit too opinonated sometimes, so I will probably p*ss one or 200 of you off at some point, but I am really a nice person, promise lol.

Oh and I am a libran lol x

How long have you been on geek?
only since May this year but I'm addicted and have learnt a shedload of stuff.

How did you find your way here?
I think one of my trainers told me about it...

What is your job now?
I do three days per week research (won't go into details or I'll bore you to death) and three days in a salon as bio sculpture tech y mas (and more)

Are you involved with any pro companies?
not yet...

What is your career background?
Nurse & respite carer for children with special needs. Worked in HIV/AIDS unit - got upset at seeing lovely people dying every day. Left the NHS, worked in PMI for two different firms as Customer Service and Quality Assurance Manager. Made redundant. Bough a franchise licence and started a local branch of a worldwide domestic cleaning franchise. Had fastest growing franchise in 10 years. Employed up to 12 cleaning staff. A really difficult business to be in when the recession hit. Nearly died in a carcrash on the M25. Became driving phobic. Decided life was too short to deal with staff and the recession, sold the business and retrained in bio, which I had worn on my own nails (stopped me cleaning when someone went off sick) for some years. A therapist friend told me I HAD to do waxing, and once I got started on training, I couldn't stop.... Now, my day only relies upon me to deliver a top quality service and I love it. My ex-staff want me back which will never happen but makes me feel I did my job as a boss well.

What are your plans for the future?
Wait and see.....

What kind of person are you?
I have OCD and openly admit it. Towels, which are taken from a marked shelf in the airing cupboard (colour co-ordinated to the room of course) must hang in a certain way or the world won't look so tidy. Toilet roll has to hang with the flap hanging from the wall to the front so a point can be folded. We have an irobot roomba vacuum cleaner that goes round the house every day to vacuum. The battery is currently dead and I have a new one on order :D. I am outgoing but can be a little shy. I am passionate about good customer service. I am happily married with a lovely step-son for whom I would walk over hot coals. I can't have my own children so my cats are my babies. I am fiercely protective of my friends and I hate the ineptitude of today's NHS. See my best friend's blog about her brain tumour for a classic example June | 2010 | The Chronicles of Tarquin Have tissues.

What other interests do you have besides this work or this industry?
I am a singer in a wedding and corporate function band as well as a cabaret orchestra and a 3 piece acoustic outfit. I have 3 gorgeous cats, one of whom has won lots of prizes. I love cooking, have skinned and boned a whole deer while it was still warm. Best bit of venison I've ever tasted. I'd love to jump out of a plane with my step-son who is a qualified parachutist but my neck since the crash won't allow me. I love musical theatre and our godson has just done a year as a West End lead now at Edinburgh Fringe. We are very proud of him and see him in shows regularly.

Loving this thread.

My real name is Sarah btw. Sorry if I've bored you.

What kind of person are you?
Well my friends tell me I am honest, trustworthy, intelligent and funny. I am a typical Cancerian and my family is the most important thing in my life. I can be flippant and sarcastic and I'm very tenacious. I'm very inquisitive and I love to learn new things.

What other interests do you have besides this work or this industry?
My family, I play cards once a week, I used to play in a snooker league and have played pool for the county, I love reading, doing quizzes, going to the pictures and eating out

I also never cook or do ironing as it's too boring!

wow , ok,, lots to ramble about as that's how I am LOL

How long have you been on geek?
Darned good question and I can't tell you without looking at my join date LMFAO... but several years anyway.

How did you find your way here?
I left another forum that I felt was ummmm too policed in terms of what you're allowed to say and not....
Or do you mean find my way into this industry?
I started as hairdresser (also a nail biter) and earned my DEP in cosmetology (which is Hairdressing/Barbering/Esthetics/Mani-Pedi... etc, was 2yrs long). I couldn't keep hairdressing due to arthritis, so went into office work (while doing nails on the side for myself and friends, but not as a business... didn't earn anything for it).
Worked for 15yrs about, in the Investment Industry. Worked the order desk (putting orders on the stock market floors) for about 5yrs.
Later when kids came along, left the office to raise my children but wanted my own money and didn't want to babysit. Friend literally smacked me upside the head and said "do nails". So here I am LOL

What is your job now?
Home Salon Owner/Nail Stylist

Are you involved with any pro companies?
How do you mean? As Educator? No.

What is your career background?
Oh gosh, easier to ask what I HAVEN'T done LOL

Whats your plans for the future?
Open a proper salon with a few junior techs, esthetician and massage therapist.
Start teaching and establish a better standard of education in this Industry in Qc/Cda.

What kind of person are you?
Ummmm I'm ecclectic. That would best describe me. I march to the beat of my own drum and always have. My interests are varied. I'm a straight shooter with no time for fluff, tell it to me straight (but politely, please LOL) and I promise the same in return. I will protect those I love with the fierceness of a tigress, so don't poke the bear on a bad day LOL But I will be there no matter what when someone is in need. I love, and love deeply and always root for the underdog.

What other interests do you have besides this work or this industry?
Animal protection and rescuing dogs. Writing. REading. Playing around with softwares doing diff things on my pc (building my own site, making little vids, etc). Belly dancing (cant wait to take a class again). Tormenting my children and harassing my husband LOL Researching my pagan-leanings. I would love to travel (watch out Geeks, if I win the lotto, you better have a bed for me LOL). Photography. Music. Encouraging my eldest' love of music and her singing.
Learning...... I love learning (never enough time though)

Ummmmmmmmmmmmm that's me, I guess?
