Hi all,

I'm working as a beauty therapist at a small salon where i'm the only employee. I am also 17 wks pregnant with my first child. So far I've been feeling pretty good and have been lucky when it came to morning sickness however I have found after doing a full body massage i don't feel too well so i'm keeping an eye on that and will stop offering that service if it continues. I'm also taking precautions when it comes to spray tanning by wearing a mask to help reduce the amount of tan i'm inhaling.

My question is to other therapists who have worked whilst pregnant how did you go working whilst pregnant? To what week did you work up to? I'm thinking i'll work up till about 35wks but is that going to be too late for the kind of work we do? As I don't work with another therapist I can't hand clients over if it suddenly gets too much...

Your experiences are welcome.

Thanks
Melissa

I'm thirty one weeks. Congratulations! I don't know if you work for someone, or are self employed. I have a salon, so work for myself, I don't get maternity leave, or maternity pay, so I'm working up as far as I can. I used to work 5-6 days per week. I now have Monday and Tuesday off. After easter i'll be 35 weeks so I'm then taking Wednesdays off too. I've booked all of June out, it all depends now when he or she decides to make an appearance. I can't have too much time off, certainly not as much as i'd like, as i'd be worried about losing too many clients!

I'm only judst getting uncomfortable at my desk for nail treatments. And my liquid still makes me sick. Have my extractor on full all the time and the windows open.

I cant get on the floor for pedicures, I do them on the bed. As for your tanning, so long as you are working safely you should be okay. It doesn't take long. I tend to do my aftercare speech while they are drying in my little room, so I can perch on a stool in there!

I don't do full body massage, only facial and shoulder massage, in with facials, I find i'm okay on my feet for them, as they too aren't long treatments.

I struggle with waxing. I do facial waxing still, and can manage underarms. But for a while I haven't done legs/bikini/packages etc as it takes it out of me. It can get quite tiring.

So long as you watch the hours you are working and don't back to back yourself too much. Plan ahead for your busy periods coming up, say prom season and wedding season so you don't overdo yourself, as you'll be bigger by then!

Everyone is different honey, so just pace yourself, only you know when you are doing too much. hth x x
