My boyfriend who i've been seeing for a couple of months went to docs yesterday and has been told he has a heart murmur. He's 37. He has to go to the hopsital for some tests. He was in a complete state when he told me, thinking its going to be bad news and hes somthing bads going to happen to him. I told him not to panic before the doctors have looked into it, that he will be ok. The GP hasn't explained anything to him and he's thinking the worst. I feel useless and don't know how to help him. I've told him I'm here for him whenever he needs me. Does anyone know any info about heart murmurs, I've tried looking on the net but most of it is about babies. I just wanted to know what he is going to have to deal with so I can try and help him. Sorry not very cheery post for new years eve!
Julie

i have had an irregular heartbeat for 9 years and going to see a specialist on the 3rd but tell him not to worry can even be caused by stress etc

Thanks for that. He was starting to make me panic too. The look on his face when he told me broke my heart, he looked so scared. I know it won't be as bad as it seems, its difficult to see that when you've just been told theres something wrong. I think the GP should of explained it to him better, I've found out more than he was told just by looking on the internet! I'll just have to keep giving him hug and telling him everything will be ok. Sure it will set his mind at rest after he's been to hospital and he knows more about it.

honestly hun you will be amased at how common these are

when they say murmmer they normaly mean iregular heart beat, my mother in law has had one for years, she takes 2 beeta blockers a day and slows down for nothing. 74 years young and if I want a relaxing holiday she is the last person I visit. lol. I'm sure he'll be fine hun just remember guys always panic!
Don't forget to let us know how he gets on, we're all here for you.

My son was found to have a heat murmur when he was young - the words panicked me but I was told it is really common. he had loads of tests and saw a specialist regulary.Eventually he was signed off and I was told he should ive a completely normal life - only concerned if he ever gets breathless a lot - which he doesn't.
Try not to worry - I'm sure the specialist will do all the necesary tests and advise him.

my husband was taking into hospital the night before halloween with the same problem, they ran a few test on him, he was in for 1 night, then they sent him home.

he is now (still) waiting for an appointment to get more tests, but they have told him, he has an extra heart beat. but it shouldnt really affect his life at all. since then he has calmed down a bit, and stopped worrying that he might be having a heart attack, and he has been fine.

hope your boyfriend gets better soon.

A heart murmur is heard as an extra sound when examined with a stethescope by the doctor. It is usually related to a valve in the heart perhaps not functioning as it should. Many people have heart murmurs and don't know they even have them until they go to the doc for something else and it is picked up then on examination. They are more common than one realizes but are not neccessarily harmless. Your boyfriends GP is correct to have it investigated and it may turn out to be harmless. The GP probably didn't go into too much detail at the time because often when patients hear something frightening then they start to panic and take nothing in anyway. Remember, every time you have a headache, it does not mean you have a brain tumour! If he's really upset about this then he should have a calm discussion with his doc again to alay his fears. Hope this helps.

yes, Mrs Clooney is right. i've just phoned my sister (paramedic) and she says its usually caused by a faulty valve. basically the valve doesn't shut properly and gets a backwash through it. it's quite common and in most cases they don't do much about it. she just informed me that my nephew has one! so there you go, she's obviously not that worried or i'd have known about. and he's not on any medication. the "murmur" is the noise you hear through the stethoscope, just as Mrs M says.

She said, in some cases, yes it can be serious, but mostly it is not. so stop panicking and just wait to see what the specialist says.

heart murmors can vary in the degree of intensistity, depending on the outcome of the initial investigations, after seeing a gp then a cardiac consultant will assess the murmour by listening and also doing an echo scan if need be,( like an ultrasound when youre pregnant) on the chest, this allows to see the flow of blood through the valves, as mrs c said its to do with either valves or walls of the heart muscles fused together ( normally already found in babies shortly after birth), it doesnt indicate an irregular heart beat though,
my son was born with a murmour, and this was found immediately and he went on to have open heart surgery as he was found to have two holes in the heart, but my cousins little boy also had one and he only needed to be seen once a yr until he was 10 i think, but other ppl have had them found at a routine appt, and this would suggest to me that no treatment would be needed as its never caused ant problems before
so i would tell him not to worry too much, and the doctor will be able to explain more when he gets the appt through
dont worry hun!
pm me if you need any more help!!!
