...if your natural nail is quite flexible/bendy a hard gel overlay might have more of a tendency to chip?

if you apply it flat it will.
but build in the correct supportive apex and it will be fine.

I've done a few of my friends nails NNO. 2 of them are still chipping after a few days. Others are lasting no bother for 14+ days.

I have been concentrating more on capping the free edge but the same one's still keep coming back with chipped gel.

I agree with Susan, I would make them a little thicker to compensate for the natural nail being so bendy....I only use a buff off (hard) gel and have clients with all sorts of nails...
