i bought a airbrush gun from a friend it didnt have instructions so i tryed it and i just used a clean nail and then put a gel top coat over the top well it started chipping. do i need a base coat or special top coat....please help :grr:

hi
you should use a base coat ontop of gel or l&p and then top coat it.
:)
hth

you can't put a gel top coat directly onto a smooth shiny surface like a nail tip. It won't bond properly and will chip. I usually finish with a 240 grit, only buff underside of nail, airbrush, then gel topcoat.

There are a few things that can cause chipping ..........

Airbrushing too thickly (which almost everyone does at first).
Paint not being thoroughly dry before you apply the top coat (which also causes crazing of the paint).

Yes you need a base coat and a top coat.

ok that helps a bit. what i had done was done the scult as usual then buffed then applied oil and then had them wash there hands. then air brushed i didnt use a base coat. i think i did make it to thick and for a top coat i didnt use there top coat just one that i had its opi axxium uv no cleanse top coat its gel top coat. but both mine and a friends had chipped really bad by that night.
And back buy the cuticle area it looked really weird it wasnt like straight lookin. if you look at my album with nail pics i have a pic of them but look at the cuticle area its so weird lookin

you should seal the paint to before you apply your top coat so your paint won't smudge as it's very fragile before it's finished,,, what paints do you use ?? it's best to use the same brand paints ,base, top coat and sealer :)

good luck with it !!

thats what i was wonderin i have badger paint but just been usin opi gel top coat. so can you guys tell me what all i need? do i need badger base coat, top coat and sealer? i didnt know about sealer. or can i just use base coat and my top coat?

you put the sealer in the gun and spray it on like you do the airbrush paint, check with the company you get the paint from i use medea, it works well looks lovely ! i have problems with cracking if i spray too many coats to quickly as said above,, have you taken a course for airbrushing ??

it take alot of practise :)

no now where offers classes around here i bout the paint a gun from another nail tech she had never used it but lost instructions and other stuff so ive played with it but im just trying to figure everything out...

ok there is alot to learn diff spraying techinques and things you wont learn on your own have a look on essential nails you can buy the airbrushing trainning dvd for £10 it's fab and will teach you all you need to know inc how to clean your gun and psi pressure this could be another reason why your paint cracked :)

were can i get a DVD at?

www.essentialnails.com it's fab you'll be a pro in no time :) by the way looked at your pics there lovely !!

I would find some training and attend, it is much better to see tips, technique and procedure demonstrated in front of you then on a dvd. If you are serious about using an airbrush you will have no problems heading to a training day to make it work for you. I suggest Airbrushes, Airbrush supplies and compressors, UK Talk to Ken Medwell he has great experience of every type of airbrush and will steer you in the right direction.
