A proposed Sunbed Regulation Bill to ban the use of sunbeds for under-18s is now at the final stage, having been passed to the House of Lords with the support of Baroness Finlay.
The bill, brought by Julie Morgan MP for Cardiff North, has gained cross party support in The Houses of Parliament and significant backing from leading charities, notably Cancer Research UK and Teenage Cancer Trust. Girls Aloud singer Nicola Roberts also added her influence to the campaign. She told the Health Secretary Andy Burnham: Growing up near Liverpool, I know girls are under huge pressure to look good and are judged on how good their tan is. She went on to say: I was really shocked when it was revealed that half of all 15-17 year old girls in Liverpool have used sunbeds. We must work together to put a stop to the dangerous culture of tanning.
If passed, the bill will also outlaw unmanned automatic coin-operated tanning salons. The Sunbed Association in the UK says it is behind the proposed measures but is concerned the bill does go far enough. Kathy Banks of TSA asked: If there is a genuine desire to make indoor tanning as safe as possible for all users, why isnt Government moving on this commitment and why arent anti-sunbed lobbyists also demanding its implementation?
