I have been applying gel on my nails for months now and want to give it a break. What do you sugguest as the best nail hardner / strengthner for the natural nail.

I use to use Mavilla, scientific stengthner and I was advised that Nailtiques products are fantastic for the natural nail - any thoughts on this product or any other products that you would have used and found effective.

I know they do different packs, especially ones for after artificial nail application - has anyone else used this?

Hi there
Nailtiques products are fantastic i cannot recommend them highly enough. The after artificial kit would be perfect for you, there are two small bottles of strenghtener A and B you use A for 6 wks then change to B for the next 6 wks ( think there may also be a small pot of nail moisturiser as well) by the end of this treatment your nails will be strong and healthy and hopefully you will be able to use no 1 which is a maintenance strengthener. Try it you wont be disappointed:biggrin:

I'd say get to your nearest CND salon and have CND Shellac service as quick as you can ... judging by my nails it works like a dream and makes your nails look beautiful at the same time. The effects last for weeks looking perfect all the time.

Jessica do a fantastic after acrylic system that will work for your gels too.
You can use Restoration first and then Critical Care.
Critical Care is a really strong strenghener, too strong for nails damaged by gels, acrylic etc thats why we reccomend Restoration first.
Hope that helps.

I presume you mean to say NAILS DAMAGED BY OVER FILING, PICKING OR INCORRECT REMOVAL as neither gels nor acrylics damage nails.

Depends who you ask.

When I learnt nail extentions my tutor taught us that they did not damage nails.

My Beauty Therapy tutor taught us that they did damage them.

Also depends on if you have been to a nail tech in a salon or one of the 100s of nail bars popping up using chemicals that are damaging and not available to buy in the UK.

I wear acrylics myself. I find it easier to keep acrylics looking perfect than my natural nails.

IS THAT OK?

When I was at college, my beauty therapist tutor also told me that artificial nails damaged the natural nails. I have since found this to be untrue.

This is like saying cars kill people - they dont, the drivers of cars kill people!

The product itself does no harm to the natural nails - it is the application and removeal which can cause the damage.

If done correctly then the application and removal of nail enhancements can actually improve the natural nails.

This is not a dig at you hun:hug:

I am sorry but I have to butt in here, I've worn L&P for the last 10 years and my natural nails have never looked better. It's got nothing to do with the chemicals, it's the filing.
There will be no damage to natural nails IF you prep correctly, the idea is to remove shine not nail layers. Provided you do that, provided you use your cuticle oil daily and provided you rebalance carefully then natural nails do not sustain damage and do not need to 'rest', 'breath' or anything else. Why would they? the nail you see is dead. Same as the hair on your head.

Now if you really want to do something fantastic for your nails skin hair etc go to a health food store and buy a bottle of aloe vera, put a cap full into a pint of water and drink that every day, Aloe contains 73 different minerals, vitamins and trace elements.
That will improve your new nail growth. For what is already there. A good cuticle oil used daily, a proper manicure every 10 days and remembering to wear gloves for housework will do far more good then anything else.
Want to show of your natural nails but stop them breaking?
Shellac!!!!!! Geeg has already got her hands on it, lucky woman for the rest of us, it will be available from the beginning of May.

I agree with all that you have said, this is what I try to get my clients understand.
This is how I have been taught too.
One of my pedicure clients told me a chiropodist told her that she must not continuously wear polish on her toes as they need to breathe and they will die.
Surely I chiropodist would understand the basic process of keritinisation????

Dear me, I now have a picture in my head of a nail with a deflaited set of lungs on top of it and a tome stone with R.I.P at the top of the picture, what should we add to that picture? Hair standing by as the chief morner? Or just common sense in the grave next door?
Just as a rough guide: If you can cut it without pain or blood loss, it's already dead, please pm me the chiropodist's name, because if she can get that wrong, I really don't want to have her treating me! Only kidding you don't need to pm me;)

may be the chiropodist discovered lungs in the toe nails!

Seriously! Can we get Doug Shoon to lecture those uneducated doctors, chiropodists etc!!!
