Hi Geeks

JUst had a client who wanted a facial. I noticed that she had a lot of blackheads!! around her jawline and chin, which i extracted using a index fingers with tissues.....not all of them came out. I do have a comedo Loop end but not sure how to go about using it.I have always used the tissues around fingers. Can anyone tell me how they go about this and is it alot easier to use the loop end or not??

Many thanks

It is not really any easier and can be uncomfortable for the client too!

The idea is to rock the loop end around the black head (make sure it is sterile) and it should be removed that way but can be very fiddly!

I always use a comedone extractor to remove blackheads, first use a hot compress or steam, this opens the pores and prevents any pain.

Next use a sterile comedone extractor, press gently onto the black head or gently drag over the area, the blackhead should come out easily.

No pain should be experienced,if the black head is deeper you can try manual extraction,i.e tissues around fingers and sqeeze.

Advise client about prevention,i.e exfoliating 1/2 times a week, keeping skin clean, cleanse, tone twice a day, eating healthily and drinking at least 8 glasses of water to flush the system out.hth.

interesting thread, in my training we were shown how to do extractions and practised them but were told that it isn't common practice to perform them anymore. i'm quite happy to include them as i think it is a beneficial part of a facial, but just wondering do you guys just go ahead with the extractions or do you advise the client that you feel its necesary after your skin analysis. thanks x

The thing is most professional facial ranges do not include blackhead removal in their routine. There is not usually time to do this.

If a client specifically asks for this then I will add a bit more time onto the facial and if I see that there is a blackhead problem during skin analysis I will explain that the client needs to return so I can do this or if I can I will do it during the treatment.

Its very difficult as usually only an hour is allocated per facial and trying to fit this in can sometimes be awkward.

If I had a facial and the therapist didn't address my blackheads(if I had them)I would feel that it wasn't a very good facial.HTH

i was never trained to use comedone extractors at college as my lecturer said they can damage the skin, so i always use fingers and tissues method.
Comedones (blackheads) are caused by a build up of sebum blocking the pores so you need to advise your client on controlling oilyness in that area, i.e. exfoliating and using the correct skincare products for her skin.

I think if a therapist was to attempt using a comedone extractor without first opening the pores then yes, quite possibly the extractor could damage the skin, but then so could squeezing with your fingers. How many people have scarred their faces sqeezing a spot???

It's like anything,if a tool is used correctly then it should be fine but if not, then it can cause untold damage.Look at e files, cuticle nippers etc.:Scared:

point taken, i offer a relaxing facial (60 mins) and a luxury facial (1hr 15) i use steam in both and i would be able to fit extractions in either but if extensive removal was required i would have to recommend additional time on treatment or a course of treatments. thanks babs

No probs, additional treaments are good for you so it can be good for business and the cliensts will appreciate your expertise and the fact that they are comedone free.

hence why i don't use them! :green:

For those that use a specialist skin care range how successfull is doing a facial treatment for this skin type at removing blackheads?

By this I mean how the backheads look when they leave the salon compaired to what they looked like when they come in.

If anything - what is it in your facial that successfully lifts these blackheads?

When i did my facial trainng I was taught the tissue method and it is much nicer IMO. I was also introduced to Dermalogica's Scaling fluid, steam first, and then use that with a few minutes of desincrustation and boy those babies pop out with such ease, it is BRILL stuff. Stabilise the skin with Post Extraction fluid afterwards.

Hi, I'm being taught with Dermalogica at college, and have used the products you mentioned apart from desincrustation. What is that? Its not in my product book either. (Sorry if this is just a term and not a product!)

Is the Dermalogica stuff like a kind of exfoliant then Sass?

Desincrustation was taught in my NVQ3 as part of electrical facials (nothing to do with dermalogica) which is probably why you havn't heard of it yet. xxx

when carrying out the consultation i always ask the client what thier reason for treatment is ie: relaxation, sort skin out, i gotta gift voucher etc. If they have noticeable black heads they are usually aware of this, and therefore will prob ask you to do something about them.in this case i modify the treatment so that it suits the clients needs.another option is to have different facials, tailored to different needs, ie one with less massage(for example) but more purifying work. These are only ideas, may or may not work for you and your business.HTHs:biggrin:

desincrustation is a term used for a galvanic treatment that helps to soften the sebum, aiding extraction. (it also has other benefits when helping to clear skin).

Sorry if i confused, it is part of electrical facials that you learn at level 3 and not anything to do with Dermalogica. The scaling fluid emulsifies the spots I believe, it is electrically charged for use with galvanics and is the mutts nuts for aiding extraction without having to apply any real pressure at all. If you want to do the full electrical thing you can also use vacuum suction on the areas too!

Thanks for clearing that up Sass.

Is there any lotions/potions that clears blackheads/comedones up quickly or removes them?

Try Bioskincare cream, contains glycoprotein which helps rid the skin of blackheads but must be used regularly, failing this you can buy gadgets to remove them i.e a gun, this zaps them.

Also Boots do a blackhead remover,it comes in as a lotion, you paint it over the area then use a sticky plaster type thing and rip it off.Its very effective.

Deep steaming and cleansing will also help.
