Hi Nail geeks

Thanks for any help you may be able to give me. I have a lady who is booked in for a manicure. On one of her thumbs and fingers she has deep ridges going across her finger.

Has any of you fab experts any idea what this may be and how I go about helping her with this if I can. The side of her thumb has a slight yellowing to it on the side as well as the bumps.

Thank you so much for any advice.

Vicky

sometimes lumps and ridges across the nail is caused by stress or depression my nails get like it when i am very stressed and that is what i was told it was not sure if there are other causes though

The yellowing could be the start of a fungal infection but we can not diagnose so i would advise her to visit her GP and get this tested,
the ridges could be due to many reasons,
i would take a photo of the nails before the treatment then you can do some research on nail diseases to narrow down what the problem is so you will know how best to treat it, hth

You could gently buff the nail plate to reduce the ridges.then use CND Ridge Out base coat. I have a client who suffers with this and I follow this and she is so pleased with her new, smooth nails

Horizontal ridges are often Beau's Lines (usually seen on most or all of the nails), or caused by the bad habit (habit tic) of having them in your mouth and rubbing the surface with your teeth or even another finger. Or injury.

Beau's Lines .. are nail cells that are impacted and indicate a slow down of growth due to illness or perhaps stress etc. usually on all fingers but there are exceptions to this.

Habit tic is not usually seen an all fingers ... but usually the thumb.

You can google these things and get more info.

To make them look better, follow peeppaws advice above but gentle on the buffing!! Or enhance them with an overlay and the ridges will most likely grow out.

Hi
Thanks to all of you who have taken the trouble to answer my question. My client says she has had it for a very long time but Im not sure exactly how long. Her husband died in February this year in awful circumstances so Im wondering if it was about then her nails started to go wrong. I got the impression though they had been like it for ages.

Ive never seen nails like them. They are not little bumps but big ridges. Ive just ordered some CND Ridge filler and will also do some very gentle buffing.

Thanks again

Vicky

If they are big dips then I don't think ridge filler polish is going to help much tbh x
If they bother her - suggest a nno which will level the nails. It would need to be l&p or gel, fibreglass wont really help much

hth x

Hi Vix I agree with pink I would use Gel my mum had a stroke in July and she cannot use one arm or hand at all the nails grow really quick but with bumps on them I have found a light buff and using gel on them to be great it makes them look even and you cannot see any bumps at all. God you can tell I am not sleepy tonight lol
