Well these are questions I am asked time and time again by therapists and one which I would like to put to you guy's.

If you apply more than one coat of spray tan solution to the skin will it go darker each time?

At what point will the skin reach saturation level and therefore not darken any further?

Does say 2 x an 8% coverage equal a 16% dosage?

Your replies would be very much appreciated and hopefully of great assistance to others.

Please lets keep this a non brand specific thread

Now, I understood that your skin can only 'tan' to a certain point - even if you bathed in it.

When I sprayed myself this summer (once and never again) some bits of me were literally dripping and some were ok and it all came out the same colour - phew.

I think that you will go the same colour whether you apply 2 dry coats or if you apply two coats and its dripping... I think the only way to go darker is to apply, develop, shower and apply again within a couple of days...

I agree with Sherrie... I do always do a thorougher coat and a wisp coat to make sure I have covered all areas.

I see ladies that have been using a moisturiser with dha everyday to lengthen their tan.. and its turning it yellow as its just too much dha on the skin. I always advise to only use these colouring moisturisers no more than once every 3rd day and a non colouring one in between.

I have sprayed someone again a couple of days later and it did go darker.. but it wasn't a good finish, but she had had another tan 4 days before coming to me.. so in respect she had had 4 tans in one week.. her tan was dark... but wore off very patchy and mottled looking. She was happy as she got to go very dark for her RAVE... but I was not happy and asked her not to tell anyone who did it for her... eeek!

I think by applying 2 coats i defo go darker!! But when it fades it fades badly and i look like i have vitiligo.....not a good look lol
I spose it depends on which solution you use, do you think? x

I find this too with the tan extender,It does make you look yellow!! The one i use is the same brand as my solution and actually says in the instructions to use twice a day! Do these companies not test this stuff out? It does annoy me cos then you have to tell the customer ...take no notice and use it every few days or whatever.I dont think it looks like a professional brand then.If you get what i mean? lol x

As with most people the face and lower legs seem to be lighter than the rest of the body, so if a customer comments on this, I offer to quickly whizz over the legs twice, it seems to work and makes it slighly darker. However, I always go over the face twice in any case as it fades quickest and only spray the body once. If say I had run out of 10%solution (which I wouldnt but if I did) I wouldnt spray 8% twice.

Thanks for all your replies folks..very much appreciated

Clearly there is no specific answer here and that there is a relation ship that exists between the customers skin type(or reaction to solutions),the grade of solution utilised and of course the condition of skin itself.

There is indeed a "saturation"point where any amount of solution applied will simply not tan any further and the extent of this saturation point is dependant upon a number of factors.

The dryer the skin the more solution is likely to be drawn into it which could result in an orange colour(like the soles of the feet and palms of the hands where the dry thick dead skin is most prolific)..an olive skin type is less likely to take on an orange appearance as it can take a higher dosage before this effect is experienced.

An oily or heavily moisturised skin is also less likely to "over dose" as excessive solution intake is partially "blocked"

A light application can take another application made which will increase the depth of tone colour however it is important not to apply to much solution, particularly with solutions that have a high initial colourant,as fade off cold be a problem.

It also follows that say 2x8% most certainly does not make a 16% which emphasises the need to "choose" the right % for the skin type of your customer in the first instance.

Thanks again for all your positive input on this subject

But does different solutions work differently??

Am probs gonna get shot for using brands here, but i don't know how else to explain it...

With Tantrick Original, you can only go a certain colour (depending on the %) but with the water based ones EOS/AG can you go darker, the more thats applied?????

Or have i imagined that one up??

To a certain degree yes but still with the parameters set out previously.

With EOS for example...by applying different quantities of solution you can effect the depth of colour tone achieved. There is still of course a saturation point.

With the AG ..again similar to the EOS but due to the higher concentration of DHA saturation point is quicker..also given the higher level of initial colour guide to much application could cause problems with fade off.

In summary the lower the DHA % in any liquid and the less initial colour guide means that additional applications will,to a certain degree possibly effect a darker tan outcome...all relative to DHA penetration levels into the skin....of course watch out for problems with fade off.

Hoping that makes sense
