Do you just "know" when you're not going to see a new client again?

I had a couple of them recently, and I was right on the money with them not coming back.

What I mean is: those clients who have their nails done on impulse, they have nails in terrible condition to start with, they seem disinterested in aftercare advice, and couldnt care less about rebalance appointments.

I had two recent clients in particular. Both came in on impulse, both had nails in terrible condition. One has had enhancements previously, one hasnt. Both mentioned that it was payday. I booked a rebalance for the first, and she didnt seem to care what time or day it was on. I suspected then that she had no intentions of turning up, and I was right. The second one was offered a rebal, but said she would ring nearer the time. I strongly suspect I wont hear from her again either.

The second one in particular annoyed me. She used to have her nails done by the lady who rented the room I am based in before me, and she kept reminding me of this and actually told me that she will give me her verdict on how good I am when she sees the end result. I wouldnt mind, but the end result was total crap and I will tell you why - she asked for flat nails. When I say flat, I mean she wanted me to file the apex out of them. I did tell her that the strength is in that central C curve but she insisted. I made it clear that I wont be held responsible when her nails break within days, but on hindsight I wish I had refused to do it. When I was talking about aftercare and it came to the "dont remove them yourself" bit, she told me that she wont be paying £15 for a soak off when she can get some acetone from the chemist for £3 and do it herself just as good (apparently thats what the other lady used to tell her to do, so I'm not losing any sleep over who's the better tech now, I can tell you).

Anyway, I've wandered off on a tangent a bit here, my question is this: Do you know when clients are never going to come back? Can you tell when they are just out frittering their wages that are burning a hole in their bank accounts, and have no interest in long term maintenance? Is there any point in offering these clients a rebal appointment when you already kind of know they wont turn up, and you could have given that appointment to someone else?

Thanks guys

I usually have a feeling when a new client rings and books as to whether they will show or not...and my feelings are usually right. But as for rebalance apts on new clients i guess i have been lucky as they always come back.

Must be Robs amazing cappaccino's.....

i get the feeling more with the one's that probably wont! I do tend to narrow these down though by either ringing or sending a reminder text to them! It is at this point when i can tell by their tone and what they say....or lack of!

You will get used to it hun,
we all seem to gain an extra sense and just know when someone wont turn up or isn't really interested but these clients still bump up our weekly takings so they are all welcome.
As for the previous tech and comments from her previous clients, just smile and take the comments on the chin, they will soon get used to you been there and will stop mentioning her or start to comment on how much better your work is

Ah thanks hun, I'm not so bothered about people mentioning the previous lady, they are bound to for a while until they get used to me, it was just this one particular woman who was judging everything I do and comparing it to her in such a tone that kind of suggested I had her previous reputation to live up to. Of course, I smiled sweetly and provided her with the service as I would any other client, but she was just particularly.... erm.......ungrateful for want of a better word!!

Clients that ring me directly tend to be genuinely interested, and those clients are the ones that keep up to their appointments, its the ones that go to the hairdressers for their hair doing and decide on impulse to have their nails done while they're there that tend to be the less serious ones, but like you've said, their money is as good as anyones, and they get the same treatment as anyone else.

Yeah you just get a feel for it after a while.
It's usually the younger ones or the ones who ring out of the blue.
Sometimes you are actually glad.

Hi

I have a similar problem and yes you can usually tell however I have been wrong in the past and the person has turned out to be a good regular client.

I would always offer the rebalance appointment and then send a reminder to the client 7 days before detailing the appointment and your cancellation policy. This usually spurs people into cancelling (if they are going to anyway) then you know what plans you have and what appointment times you have free for the week ahead.

Hope this helps and remember, if in doubt, make notes ont he record card and get them to sign it then you dont get bitten on the bum!

Good Luck
Claire x
