I've been asked to do a manicure for a friend who I know picks, nibbles and eats the skin around her nails (not just the cuticle but the surrounding skin too). They look really sore although she says they aren't but I'm not sure if soaking during the manicure would be a good idea. Can anyone advise what type of manicure would best suit her?

i also have a friend that does this - but ONLY WHEN SHE NOT WEARING ENHANCEMENTS - have you tried to get her to have enhancements? - i also have clients that do this, but dont touch, bite, nibble once they have enhancements on - worth a go flower

Now I have to own up, Im a chewer/nibbler of the skin. Cant tell you why I do it, well I can its because the skin gets dry and I cant stop once I start. (I have never bitten my nails but always nibbled the skin). I go at the skin hammer and tong, even when it bleeding and it does hurt (I think I maybe a bit sadistic with myself lol), and have to stick a plaster on just to stop myself (gross I know), because to be honest I don't notice Im doing it.

But the thing is, if I have a manicure I dont nibble, as their is nothing there to nibble.

Its a terrible habit, I know and I do hang my head in shame, but if you remove any hard skin she may have round her nails, you may be able to help a nibbler stop nibbling.

Thanks for the advice. I would love to get enhancements on my friend (who I met on the VCTC Nail Tech course at college) but unfortunately she's a bit of a dabbler on the nail front and keeps putting them on and taking them off and putting them on........ I can't seem to get it through to her that it's important to take care of her nails.

I agree that regular manicures would help, but what would be the alternative to soaking so that I wasn't drying the skin out even more?

You could try using a hot oil treatment (bowl in a bowl cant remember the posh name) on her cuticles and rub the remaining the oil into the skin round it, because apart from a good ol' soak there isnt that much of an alternative.

But I do know when I have regular manicure's Im a good girl and dont nibble.

Thanks for the suggestion - anyone else have an alternative to the manicure soak?

I hope you get plenty of manicures then, plus maybe the odd biscuit or two:lol:

Sadly I dont have time, so sniff sniff get out the kleenex, I have to do them on myself, and thats just not the same.
