Hi

Im new to the forum, I have lurked for years!

I recently was made redundant, and as I qualified as a beauty therapist and nail technician about 15 years ago, I thought I would follow my dream and start working for myself.

I did the nail extensions course approx 8 years ago and from there only used the fibreglass system so 8 years of no acrylic and gel! Gel has now become very popular over here so I would like to offer this as a service and bought the essential nails dream soak off gels. I have a UV lamps and all the other gear so today got cracking on a set of gels, what a disaster!!!

I cant be doing it right and was hoping someone would go through step by step what I should be doing with this product??

I havent done the essential nails course, so should I buy their DVD and if so which one??

Thanks in advance as my clients nails came off in the shower!!!

Best advice I can give you if you want to truly make a business of nails is to do an up-to-date course with an up-to-date product.

You are woefully behind the times if your training was 15 years ago and it is current knowledge, techniques and practise that you need. It is not the function of this site to do that for you, but the company whose products you wish to use in your business.

May I recommend CND Brisa Gel as one of the most advanced and strongest gels you could use which will enhance your business.

Thankyou for your response.

I did not do my nail training 15 years ago, it was as I said, 8 years ago and have been using the fibreglass system every since i started working in London as a nail technician. I have also been a tutor for beauty therapy at the local college of Further education where they also do not teach nail extensions. I wouldnt think that because I qualified as a beauty therapist 15 years ago that would make me woefully behind the times? or am I missing the point of that comment?

I live in the Channel Islands so we arent lucky enough to have the courses that you can easily attend in the UK. This is why I have come on here to ask for advice. I do not expect any member of the site to update my knowledge, I understood from reading this forum that there were expert users of the Nail essential products on here. Is this a 'behind the times' product? I am interested to know as like I said, none of these products are used or sold in the Island.

I am currently looking at the CND website and may call them in the morning.

If anyone who uses the Essential Nails products would like to help me thats appreciated as all systems are different.

If its worth buying the gel training DVD from Essential nails please could someone let me know.

Thanks

Zoe

I apologise if I missed the gist of your thread. I only returned late last night from 2 weeks holiday in Italy and must have been tired. Still, even in beauty therapy, many things change in 15 years and in nails even more rapidly ... training in my opinion should be life long to keep up to date. Imagine if hairdressers didn't update their skills every year? It is the same in our business.

In any case I class the product you are using as a training gel and it quite simply is not in my opinion of the calibre or quality you need to use in a business. For a good solid business you need products that are strong and beautiful and that last for your clients. When you find such a product, then train with the company who know it best.

In the meantime, the DVD may help you somewhat but it won't change the quality of the product or its strength or longevity in the salon, and disappointed and dissatisfied clients ...... go elsewhere!

My advise would be, do your research on here regarding Essential Nails courses and their dvd's.

From personal experience I bought the L+P acrylic course from Essential Nails and didnt get along with it at all. I did not feel that I was learning sufficiently enough and I did not like the workability of the product. I decided to forget about it and enrolled on a night class at my local college and did a VTCT level 2 course in Nail Enhancements - having the tutor there to help me, answer questions and demo was far better. I have since gone onto level 3 and done several Creative conversion courses - the Essential Nails course still isn't completed I could do it now in a few days but I can't be bothered as I don't need the certificate.

As you are qualified, I suspect that you need a refresher course such as a conversion course. If you really want to do nails and they don't offer refresher courses in Guernsey maybe you will have to go to the nearest academy to you on the mainland. Try researching some of the main names such as CND (Creative), NSI, Young Nails, EzFlow etc for the best one for you. hope that helps

Hi, I would also recommend a refresher/conversion course to refresh your memory and to learn more about whoever you go with. Just do your research well and figure out who will give you ongoing support and education. If you qualified 8 years ago and havent done nails in that time, yes, I suggest that you may be "behind the times" Like said, a lot changes and even the most experienced nail techs still go for regular training and updates. But a refresher/conversion course would sort this out for you x

Thanks for your replies, I have spoken to CND and am going to arrange to do their course next time I am in the UK. Its an investment!

I have also clarified what i am doing wrong with Essential Nails, I shouldnt have been using a bonder, simple eh!

Just have to save up the pennies now :) and stick with the well used fibreglass products of yesteryear!
