Hi all,

I am new here and am considering my options as I am a FT mum and want to refresh (last nail course I did was *cough* 20 yrs ago) my skills.

I was wondering if any of you qualified as a nail tech via a home study nail courses?

I can either do a 3 day per week one year course going over things I have covered already to get a recognised qualification or I can try one of the many specialist home study courses available.

I have checked out a few and am considering this one as detailed here.
X-Posed - Secrets of the Sexes!: Nail Technician courses - learn nails at home

It seems reasonable, charges around the same fee as a ft college course.

Have any of you tried this route and if so how did you find it?

Thanks!!

i first started out with this course by essential nails,
and for me it was great,
you have to be very self motivated though
good luck xx

ah excellent

That's great to hear. There are so many courses on the web, good to find one a real person has actually used, and so soon!!

I am thinking of doing gel nails and maybe airbrushing later.

My worry is being sufficiently self motivated.

I already have a bunch of enthusiastic wanabee clients and haven't even started yet!

Is the certificate widely recognised as the course promises?

do a search on here hun, type in essential nails you will be reading post all night!!!

some dont rate it as its not overseen by a tutor, but i rated it and it was a great eye opener to the world of nails x

i've done acrylic and gel with essential nails and i am now doing airbrush course and yes you have to be discipled with yourself but if your commited you'll do it..xx

ah great yes will give it a whirl.

I think the fact they do see finished product is good enough.

My earlier experience of college when a tutor was present was that they didn't oversee every individual students work either, it was marked at the end and in some cases in our and the clients absence ( go figure ;) )

Excellent, I had no idea it was so popular.

It just goes to show. I searched loads of home study nail courses and despite the fact it is not the cheapest do prefer it so far in terms of what it promises.

i've had no trouble getting insurance and i am doing an acrylic conversion course with entity, i think the only one's that don't recognise it are creative but don't quote me on that..xx

You won't have a tutor watching over you with a home learn course either. If you already have a certificate why don't you do a 1-2-1 with one of the major companies, ie Creative, EZFlow, NSI etc etc

cool :)

It certainly is wider known than I first thought.

I thought I was onto something new in the world of nails ;)

I am going to turn my little conservatory into a mini nail bar - once I have signed up for the course and got my kit. The lighting is good there.

I hope to draw people to my home rather than go to theirs.

Does this work for many?

My clientelle will largely be made up of pals and coffee morning and school gate mums.

I did the EN gel and maintenaince course and passed, about to start my acrylic sculpt, I didnt have any problems getting insurance, or work lol..Im doing really well tbh ...long as its what you want to do and the motivation is there, you will do it, and there are plenty of us on here you can shout for information if needed..xx

The training I had all those years ago re nails was manicure, predicure, hand arm, foot, leg massage etc. So no training re extensions and that is what I want to get certification in now. But I will check that link you posted thanks!!

if your practising on your family and friends while training you will still need to get some insurance, i just kept to Rhi-handa ( nail trainer ) while training..xx

I 'm not worried about this aspect - should I be?

Girls do each others nails all the time without it.

Meanwhile I am now looking into the 1-2-1.

I have bought some books and a training dvd *(and a training hand) to refresh my knowledge in advance of course/practicing etc. so if I feel confident I may opt for the 1-2-1 as Sandi suggested. It all sounds a bit soon but hey!! Strike while the iron is hot!!

Lots to think about.

Ah ok, didn't realise that you hadn't had any enhancement training. In that case you'll need to do a foundation course if you choose to train with the nail companies I mentioned previously.

Yes you should be, very much so, it is a legal requirement.

With out training they are causing lots of damage and the chemicals involved can be dangerous if you are not trained.

As Sandi has said you will have to start at foundation level.

You would learn far more and much quicker from a well recognised product based course that is within a class room,
and if you ever needed to work in a salon you would find it very hard to find employment with a home learn course such as essential nails, most salons ask that you are creative trained hth

Oh its great to hear others are with Essentail Nails and are enjoying it and have been sucessful. I came on here the other day asking about creative courses in Salisbury and i called Sweet Squared up to find that they are starting courses in Salisbury again in about a months time but after some thought and consideration i am going to learn through Essentail Nails instead.
I only want to do nails from home during my spare time and im a Army Wife and my husband is serving in Iraq atm so it will be difficult for me to get sitters for the kids during the 4 days plus a model for day 3 and 4. It would be hard doing a years college course without him around too. I've just discovered that i will get 10% forces discount through EN too which isnt much considering the expense but it all helps when i want to do 4 of their courses. :)
My clientelle hopefully will be made up from the Army Wifes, coffee mornings and school gate mums aswell and it will be something i can take with me when we and if we get posted, there's always Army Wifes wanting their nails done for SQN parties :-D

I wish you luck in whatever you choose :)

Which would you choose. The acrylic or the gel package.

I've enrolled at at my local college for September 08. Twice they have cancelled the course. Gutted!

Trying again for convenience....in 2 ways. Third time Blessed!

But would like to have a fore-knowledge pre starting. I have daytime commitments.

Would like to go with essentials. Acrylics or Gel? Your personal thought.

Just want to start.

Thank you
