Would just like peoples thoughts on short courses.
Do you think there should be a limit to how many different courses you can do in one day?
I've done short courses myself so i have nothing against them but i would only do one at a time so that i can digest all the information and just concentrate on that one subject.
What do you think?

I'm guessing it's my blog that's making you ask this.

I personally feel today I have taken it all in. It wasn't 3 things during 9-5. I was there until about 9.30 at night, you might think that's too long, but I was buzzing by the end of it. Yes, tired, but still buzzing, if that's possible.

2 were eye treatments so had similar theory which I think helped. I don't think I could have done say eyelash extensions, spray tan and waxing or facial or massage.

I am generally a fast learner and know my own capabilities. Not saying I found it easy or that it is easy, but that I know my limits.

Yes it was your blog that made me post the thread-lol.
To be completely honest i was a bit gobsmacked.
Spray tanning is usually a half day course and then lots and lots of practice.
Eyebrow and lash tinting is also usually a half day course and then home to pactice.
Eyelash extensions is usually a 1 or 2 day course. If it's a one day course then it's usually 8 hours.
To do all 3 in one day is cramming it in to say the least.
I too am a quick learner but even so i wouldn't want to learn 3 different treatments in one day as i like to take my time and make sure i know everything about one treatment before moving on to the next. I just think it's a lot to take in in one day and your poor brain must be working overtime!
I think a lot of trainers (and i'm making a generalisation here) see training as a quick way to make some money and don't necessarily think of the best interests of the students.
I just find it quite shocking that in 12 hours or so you can learn 3 new treatments, be qualified and then go and work on the public.
That's just my opinion and i'm sure they'll be some that disagree but i just think it's wrong.

understand what your saying.

The eyelash extensions and spray tanning were the normal full time as they would have been. They weren't cut down shorter. They couldn't have been as there were others there. The only one that was, was tinting and only because it was mostly the same theory as extensions.

I haven't come away from these short courses feeling like I've been ripped off or not learned enough. Totally the opposite.

It's the amount of courses in one day i was referring too.
I think it's unfair to expect students to digest so much information in one day.
I'm really not inferring that you aren't capable of learning all the courses but you said yourself that you struggled with the eyelash extensions to start with but you think you got there in the end.
You also said that when you did your cousins eyelash extensions you really struggled and it took you ages and you didn't even manage to do half a set on her.
You had to cancel your next set as you had a headache from doing the first set.
Could that not be down to having all that information going round your brain?
If you had done just that course then you could have solely concentrated on that and not had other distractions.
Please don't think i'm having a go at you personally, i just think it's unfair to expect anyone to digest so much information in a few hours.
I suppose it's a sign of the times and we expect everything so quick nowadays.

I do totally understand where you are coming from and I agree with you about the headache and that.

It's my own fault for wanting to do so much in one day. I think I just got carried away with learning.

I hope I haven't offended anyone by doing so many in one day. I certainly don't think you can learn to be a beauty therapist in a day. I hope I haven't come across as that. :)

You haven't offended anyone
It's fab that you want to learn so much.
I think the trainers are at fault to allow it to happen.
It's hard enough to practice one treatment after being trained.
I just worry that students take in so much information and then end up struggling because they can't remember everything.

I personally think it is alot to learn in a day, I dont think I would want to learn three new treatments in one day. I teach beauty and holistic courses, and at the academy spray tanning is a day course, manicure a day course, pedicure a day course, the only half day courses are basic nail art and paraffin wax but learners must already hold a manicure/pedicure certificate to do them.

We met up the night before and went out for a nice relaxing meal and chatted loads of theory on the eye courses,
and i left a training manual with Lee Ann so she could have a read and digest some of the info before doing the class the next day,
had i of been local to Lee Ann the classes would have been taught over more days but as i was only in the area for the evening before and the full next day it was a little unavoidable,
as for the comment about trainers seeing it as a quick way to make some money, i haven't taken this personally but just wanted to point out that many of us trainers teach because we enjoy teaching,
we make a lot more money sat in our salons treating clients than we do teaching, trust me.

Lee Ann you did great hun, and as i explained to you on the phone, you just needed to get a good rest before doing your first set,
you know where i am if you need me

I wasn't suggesting that you personally were only in it for the money, i was just making a generalisation.
I just think it's a hell of a lot to take in in one day.
I hope you don't mind me quoting a reply you made to someone who had a half days training for eyelash extensions;

Half a day
wow that's not very long to learn such an intricate treatment.

This is my point exactly. If the treatment is so intricate surely it is best to only learn that treatment on the day.
That only then leaves 4 hours to fit the other 2 treatments in.
It's nothing personal, i just feel that it's not fair on students to expect them take in so much information.

I would like to join in this discussion from a learner and a trainers point of view.

I teach short courses, sometimes I fit 2 courses in a day but we work longer hours. My manuals (as dictated by my accreditation) all have contra-indications, contra-actions, benefits, consultation skills, treatment plan, code of practise, A&P, etc. So their is no need to go over that work twice. I would only teach some of the courses like this, other courses need the full day, so its the trainers skill to work out what will fit.

As a learner, I had my skin/body care trainer come up and do a lot of training with me in 2 days, a lot of it was repetitive so we got a lot of work in. Yes, I was brain-frazzled but would do it again in a second, and infact have just learn't 4 new techniques in 2 days at the beginning of the month.

It really depends on the subject matter, the trainees existing knowledge and their confidence levels. Why teach people to suck eggs?!

Not everyone is suited to this amount of learning, but for those who are, it works just dandy.

What would be a problem is if it became generic. I agree with Louise, most trainers aren't in it for the money, they are in it because they enjoy it, and also know that some peoples lifes are jampacked and can't take time out to do longer courses.
