Hello Everyone,

I am hoping you can help me, please can you let me know what qualifications you need to do hair extensions?

Many Thanks :D x x x

Absolutely Tantina, it can be as simple as doing a One Day Intensive followed by some case studies and as long as you have the on-going support from your trainer then you will be fine. The qualification for this is a Habia certificate that allows you to practise and get insurance.
I offer these courses myself and in fact cover the Cardiff area. So take a look at my website and perhaps you'd like to call me or PM me for a chat.
It's a great business to be in, for sure. I love it.
Take a look at the site though ....there are a couple of unique aspects that you won't find from other trainers. :)

Do u need to be a hairdresser to do your courses? To match colours/cut hair etc?

No Kate it is taught on the course. And I didn't mention but it can be done in your own home. As it happens, though I am living in the South, I have family in Yorks and could easily plan a visit at the same time as a training. :)

My advice when finding training would be to do the following

  • Research in your area of what is the most popular method.
  • Find a hair extensoin training company that can offer you everything you require from them.
  • Ask lots of questions
  • Train in one method only on the day that your doing your training
I have done training with quite a few different hair extension companies and they all differ.

If your a non hairdresser and your going into this with no experience dont expect to come out of the training thinking you know everything as you wont. You need to practice and practice, get friends and family and work on them first before fitting hair extensoins on paying clients

I wold definetly advise a hair extension cutting course aswell to follow up. Or a hairdressing course

Education is vital.
Hairdressing experience is not essential but imagine having you investment cut by a non hairdresser .
In many cases some non hairdressers can learn to blend.

hey tantina,i trained with Belle hair extensions and im not a hairdresser,in the course i learned absolutely EVERYTHING including the cutting side,I 100% recommend their training course, one of the sugerbabes was in my training course too!x

I work for BELLE HAIR EXTENSIONS ACADEMY, we do hair extension courses in 12 different methods and also eyelash extension courses all over the UK.We also train in big name salons such as Rush and Tony and Guy. If you're not a trained hairdresser already, our one or 2 day intensive course would be most suitable as we are all fully qualified hairdressers and teach how to cut/blend them properly. Our next courses will be held in London,Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow. Please visit Belle Hair Extensions | Hair Extension Salon | London | 020 8432 6302 or SMS 07939 211 796 for further information. Kim xxx

I'm not a hair person at all, but I think if I were going to spend oodles of dosh on extensions I'd feel more comfortable if it were done by a qualified hairdresser who's gone on to learn extensions afterwards.
Just my opinion!

Well said!

I can understand you saying that Lynne and of course there will be some good hairdressers who have added extensions to their portfolio with great success. But here's the thing that is not always obvious. Hair extensionists who have only trained to fit extensions and who therefore only work at fitting extensions are, of necessity, specialists and have the extra experience and skills development that specialists have. We are fitting hair extensions day after day, week after week and that experience tells.
I'm not meaning that hairdresser trained extensionists are less able and do not mean to offend anyone by what I'm saying. Please don't think that. But let's be clear about where the good fittings come from. They come from those who are very good at fitting extensions. And those people may be hairdresser trained or they may not.
I have heard many ghastly stories about other fittings ....and sometimes seen the results...that have been fitted in salons, by hairdressers. I have also seen some horrible results fitted by non hairdresser trained.
The fact is we cannot assume that hairdresser training makes you a better extensionist. We can assume you can do perming, colouring, styling etc. And we can expect that you have a much wider range of cutting skills. But if we non hairdressers have learned the cutting skills we need for blending in extensions well then you will get an excellent fitting from us.

Linda

I do agree with you in some aspects of what you are saying Linda about good fittings being provided by people good at extensions and this maybe by a professional hairdresser or an extensionist.
However as hairdressers not only do we learn how to , cut ,perm , colour etc but we also spent alot of time learning all about contra-indications of the hair and scalp , which cannot be underestimated.

Lucelasticx: I have noted you comment many many times on threads from hair extensionists......Whilst you are entitled to express your opinions and to seemingly promote that hair extensions should only be fitted by qualified hairdressers; the law and training providers and insurance providers recognise hair extensionists qualifications. Blending THE EXTENSION is not rocket science as you must be well aware and many/most hair extension methods are not any more risky or require intense knowledge of contra-indications than putting your hair up with a ponytail band! It is not a loop-hole in the law.. it's common sense. (Beside my training went into great length of contra-indications?)
I have been to many a very shoody/poor and plain right awful hairdressers, dreadful cutting skills and who can cause terrible damage with very strong chemicals etc. You are a professional should know that a NVQ in hairdressing doesn't mean you are any good.
I know I will be shot down in flames as I've seen it done soooo many times on here!!!!!!!!! and that's a shame!
