Hi Geeks,
this is my first post on this sight and im feeling pretty happy to have found you all! im hoping for some advice...
im in the process of starting up my own mobile spray tanning business & have come across two types of systems. the typical HVLP spray tanning systems that we used at the salon & the compressors with the option of the gravity fed spray guns.
just wondering if anyone has any opinions on these two & what they think is the best choice for my business?
I've been told that the gravity fed guns are a great investment as they only use approx 35ml per tan compared to the suction fed on the hvlp which use around 80ml.
But these systems look so different to the hvlp ones and dont have the heat function either.
I just dont want to spend up big on the compressor only to be dissapointed & end up going with the good old faithful anyway.
would love to hear about all of your experience with different systems or any advice you could give me!!?
thanks xx

I use a HVLP and love it,
and i only use around 25 to 30 mls of solution per tan,
from my experience you get less over spray with a good HVLP too, hth

I have a HVLP and i find it great. Go for the HVLP and you could always invest in the other one once to have a good client base. xx

I run both HVLP and compressor and love both for different reasons.

I use my HVLP for mobile work and my compressor for salon based tans.

The HVLP is noisier (by quite a bit) and in my opinion the result (the actual tan....not not the guide colour) from an airbrush and compressor is finer...more misted on the skin that sprayed at. The compressor also does use less tan than the HVLP when i compare it with the same solutions in each, albeit different solutions require different amounts, so like for like comparison is the only way.

The HVLP is quicker. Some clients prefer the HVLP's slightly heavier application of guide colour (for the feel good factor of a tan there and then) whereas some do prefer less initial colour on the skin....less to mark clothes etc. the result is the same colour though.

And if you wish to offer something a little extra, you can learn to contour with an airbrush run by compressor but not with a spray gun.

For me the HVLP is ideal for quick, mobile work....the compressor is better in the salon for a quiet system that uses less solution and for the more discerning client.

Good luck in your decision.....I hope the above is useful in helping you make it, once you take you business factors into account!

thankyou all so much for your help, there are some good suggestions for me to think about - its great to hear advice from experienced spray tannners :) i do love the results we get from our hvlp, but have never used a compressor so have nothing to compare it to.

I am not sure about Australia but here in the UK the vast majority of spray tan therapists use HVLP sysems...much quicker ,less over spray and quick to set up in the clients premises.

Bit noisier than compressor machines but very robust...simply throw in the back of the Fiesta and off to your customer..sets up in moments ,spray away and then throw(gently) back into the boot of the car and away.

I personnel like compressor for home /private use however for commercial application it has to be the HVLP
HTH and good luck with your new business venture
