Hiya
I have recently qualified in NVQ2 beauty and decided (stupidly) not to go back to level 3 straight away as i need some money and need a job. To be honest i don't no why i did it, nobody will hire me ANYWHERE even just in shops. I dont no why? Can anybody help me with how to increase my chances of getting hired? my friend managed to get 3 jobs in salons all on part time, and she was only level 2 qualified as well. The problem is that my chances of actually making it back to level 3 are very slim, they only accept 14 girls for level 3 out of over 200 girls. I wanted to set up my own mobile buisness but i have no job, so i havnt been able to get a car and learn, i need insurance (does anybody no how much that costs for beauty?) and everything else that comes with it. If im honest im stuck in a rut, and im getting deppressed. I need help and dont no who to ask so thats why im here. I was thinking about paying for a NVQ3 course in a local beauty school but again no job, no money. Beauty isnt realy what i wanted to do it was make-up and they didnt teach make-up on the course i was on. Can anybody help me any advice would be great as im loosing the plot now. Thanks, Hannah x

Hiya Hun

Have you tried your local adult education centre . They helped me with training and funding. If you are not working I think (don't quote me) you only pay the exam fee (about £100) and you can pay this in instalments.

I have completed my level 2 but level 3 is not available locally so..... I am doing separate modules as and when they come up. I have done my make up course and loved it.

Good luck hun and keep ur chin up xxx

Do you have a spare room in your house and you could have a home salon where people come to you which would save you the car money etc

You should just focus on what you can do for the minute and aim to perfect these skills so that you outdo all your competition on what you can do.

If anyone asks why your not level 3 just tell them you'd rather be amazing at little than average at a lot!

I'm guessing if your friend can get a job at level two and you can't then your not selling yourself as well as you could be. Try sprucing up your CV and building your confidence.

However all the above is in vain if your heart isn't in beauty as everyone will sense it from you.

You say that beauty isn't really what you wanted to do and that may be your downfall. If you don't have a passion for what you are doing, you will probably not be able to beat the competition there is for jobs or clients.

Would you be able to build a career out of just doing make up alone? Now that you have done Level 2 in beauty, do you enjoy doing beauty treatments?

Don't be too disheartened. Take a step back and think carefully what you want to do. Don't pursue further beauty courses unless you are confident you want to do beauty. Don't just concentrate on the financial aspect, think about what you would enjoy doing. As has been advised, it would be worthwhile speaking to someone at your Adult Education Centre.

Sorry if my advice is not what you wanted to hear but I think you need to consider carefully your options. Good luck! x

hi hun i know exactly how u feel i have been training nearly 2 years and cant afford more courses or a car either so i have been looking for jobs lately to with no avail as yet altho had another interview today !

ive decided to just try and get a part time job for a beauty supplier in my area and then when im qualified do it from home 1 day a week . i looked into some grants but wasnt eligable at the mo . I looked in to the princess trust grant . they give u grants for further training which u could maybe do at a private college if ur local one hasnt any spaces left . u can then study from home and put ur portfolio together , enabling u to spend time looking for a job and working out a busines plan . There are also other grants such as the adult learning grant and also career develpment loans that u dont pay intrest on and the government let u pay it back in installments . heres a link for u hun ttp://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAndLearning/AdultLearning/CareerDevelopmentLoans/index.htm have a look round on this site theres a few options . hth all the best xx

Follow your dreams, if it is make up you want to do, go for it. Otherwise you will regret it. There are some amazing schools etc that offer just make up courses look in to it. Funding is available if pennies are tight. There are jobs out there for level 2 its trying to find them babes its hard I know. But remember never lose track of your goals...

these may help

Good luck x

I am just doing my level 3 now so i am only nvq 2 qualified and work in a salon. I had the same trouble as you. I put an advert on gumtree and somone called me for an interview. So the jobs are out there you just have to find them hun.
Are you anywhere near Teddington? I could possibly get you a job there xxx

I would contact your local college asap, if you sell yourself well they might take you as a late starter-our college has only re-opened for part-timers this week. As an alternative you could look at doing level 3 holistics which is about the same amount of work and will boost your skills.

Are we talking just beauty jobs or any jobs.Without meeting you none of us would really be able to say why it is that you maybe not getting a look in jobwise.
Maybe it is your manner, your look.
Being good in an interview is something to study and learn in itself. You need to be able to sell yourself.
Is there anyone you trust and knows you well that would give you an honest opinion on what you may be doing wrong. My guess would be that you are not coming across with confidence and enthusiasm.

how long have you been jobhunting for? i too thought i would never get a job as everyone wanted level 3. I am actually doing level 3 but still needed a part time job and i did eventually find one. Don't give up hope yet and remember that colleges have high drop out rates (ours certainly does!) and will then usually offer the places to others for up to the first four weeks of the course.
