I have a 2year old work part time monday to friday and then i do beauty at night i know other mums must do it but sometimes i feel like throwing it all in i get so stressed! To top it off it isnt even worth my while i made the mistake of when going mobile going far to cheap as this wasnt my main earner it didnt bother me, BIG MISTAKE! Just keen to hear how you balance it all and as i said keep motivated. xx

I think making money keeps one motivated. Sorry if that sounds crass but it is the reason why we all work after all.

If you are not making any money it is hard to be enthusiastic about what you do. When you juggle too many balls in the air .. home, family, marriage, 2-3 jobs of course it is stressful.

I would give up the night job completely and concentrate on your part time job and your family. If you are not earning money and are stressed out then there is no point at all in doing what you are doing.

Later on down the line when you can give more energy to the beauty side of things (if that is your passion) then that is the time to do it.

I agree with geeg here.
Making money is the primary reason we go to work, if we can enjoy it too then bonus, but if you are neither making money nor enjoying your work you'll wind up wanting to put your head in the oven!
If you have a few of regular clients you've built up a relationship with, then keep them on but inform them that from 'X' date your prices will be increasing to 'X' amount. They probably already realise they are getting their services cheap and if they've enjoyed the treatments will want to continue regardless of a price increase. You'll be giving up less of your evening time but making worthwhile money for the time you do give up.
Good luck!

To keep motivated I like to spend a little quiet time each day thinking about my long term goals and aspirations. If I you've had a particularly hard week, but achieved a lot, then a little treat to yourself without feeling guilty is a fine reward!

Thank you for your replies i agree with what you say, running around making no money aint much fun! Think i may just increase my prices and see what happens if i get work then at least it will be worth going out for, if not then thats okay to i suppose, must admit i dont feel very passionate about the job right now, so will see what happens.

Thanks again

Put your prices up hun you have nothing to lose dont work for nothing its hard enough when you have a family but working for buttons would stress and de motivate anyone. Is there any way you could work from a room at home even least then it would cut you travelling out. hth:hug:

Thanx rock chic, i dont have a spare room, wish i did! If i cant offer a suitable time then sometimes they come to my home but its my living room i have to use so i feel unprofessional so charge pennies but i will defo be looking at my prices again xx

EVEN A SITTING ROOM OR DINING ROOM CAN FEEL PROFESSIONAL IF YOU ARE professional.

If you provide a good experience for your clients it does not matter where you do it. Do not apologise for it. I worked from a home salon for sometime before opening my first 'official' salon. It was professional and my clients loved it ... the business worked around me and the family and it was wonderful ... sometimes I wish I had never stopped working from home. I had more money in my pocket that is for sure .. instead of paying so much of it out to other people once I had an official place of work (then 3 more!!) !! :irked:

If you're not making any money from the beauty side of things, I would draw a line under it and start again. Wind it down then set your prices at a level that are realistic and that are worth working for. Get new clients and start as you mean to go on. Good luck. xx

Thanks girls really appreciate the advice, sometimes i let things really get on top of me but i am going to do what advised and revise prices because am not giving a bad service i know that, its just my customers have got used to me charging low prices and also they think because its not main job then i shouldnt be charging loads. one of them even said yes but this is just extra cash in your pocket!!, not thinking about me buying products or anything as its not cheap products i use, i end up getting angry with them (of course i dont say anything cheeky) and thinking what the hell (its got to that point where i am not enjoying juggling all the balls like fiona said)

Thanks again x

I don't think clients often appreciate the outlay involved in training, products etc when they pay for their treatments. One of my clients yesterday said to me, "I was laying there thinking how lucky you are getting £50 for this hours work"! Once I'd explained the cost of the equipment I was using on her, how much the product for that treatment had cost & the various other overheads associated with offering the treatment she realised that actually us beauty therapists rarely get to stuff our couches with cash!

I wonder if these same people go into the dentist's office and would say the same thing? How dare people be so into your business that they say things like that? I really don't think we should have to justify ... they don't listen anyway .. any more than a doctor or dentist justifies the cost of their expertise. It is beyond cheeky...it is disrespectful and downright rude and ignorant :irked:.

I have recently put my prices up.I gave warning and issued everyone with a new price list to come into effect as and when, but also, maybe unprofessionally i have kept certain peoples prices the same i havent said to them anything about my price rise so they do not know i have had one because they may feel embarrased. They are on pensioners rates in case anyone asks and or friends discount.
I still make a profit from these people all be it a smaller one but i don't want to put their prices up, i know they are people that can only just afford their treatments anyway and its rewarding to treat them and they are people i really love as clients they are mostly old and are a joy to treat. When they give you a 50p tip it means such a lot and the fact that they are still looking after themselves is just great, but they just can't afford salon prices.

I think you start to resent doing treatments which in turn then becomes resentment to the person when you are undercharging.

at the end of the day, the client is booking you for a professional treatment, its not their fault that you are under-charging and would still deserve a professional treatment. If you explained to them, I bet most of them would prefer to pay more but have a professional treatment.

You have hit the nail on the head hippy chick that is exactly how i am feeling  i know it is my fault entirly because i started off wrong and when they text and phone at all hours of the day/night i do feel like telling them where to go to be honest but it is not their fault and they dont see any problem because i am not letting them think otherwise. x
