Godd morning Geeks,

I had a lady come to me about 2 weeks ago asking if I could teach her to do nails. I told her that I am NOT a qualified educator, therefore I was unable to teach as not being an educator I could not certificate her and without a certificate from a reputable company she would not be able to obtain insurance and operate.

I had a client with me at the time, so I gave her my phone number and told her to ring me later that evening and I would find phone no's etc, for the various training acadamies.

When she rang me I gave her the number for the Local CND training acadamy and also Essential nails Insitute (as I know that you can pay over 6 months with them).

She then told me her story - she was with a partner for a few years who beat her up badly, lived in a safe house for 2 years, until she was moved to a little house near to me. She is on her own, has to start her life all over again with nothing, has very little furniture etc, and is at a very low eb at the moment.

I then said that she should ring Essential Nails, as with the lack of funds that could be her best option, do the Foundation course with them, and then when finances are better, do the creative conversion course with CND. I did say that if she started a course, I would give her any help she needed, but reiterated that I was unable to actually teach her.

She phoned me again last night saying that she was unable to start a course with Essential Nails as she needs and bank account to have the monthly payment debited from, and she hasn't got one, so would I teach her, again I went through it all as the to reasons that I would not/ could not teach her. The she asked is she could come and watch me. I said no, as I'm not keen on that idea and I don't think it would be fair to my clients.

I've now told her to contact the Local College and see about doing a course with them, as if she's on Benefit, she may well be able to get it for free. (not sure though if this is correct)

The problem is that I'm a bit of a softy, and I feel that someone that is so far down on their luck needs a bit of a helping hand out of the "big black hole" that she is so obviously in.

Do any of you lovely ladies/gents have any other suggestions that I could pass on to her.

Thanks

Sally X

Whenever I get asked this quiestion I direct them to this site :green:.
The collage sugestion IMO would be her best bet at the moment, at least it would give her a taste of the work involved without spending a lot of money.

I agree with you with not allowing her to sit, watch and learn with you in the salon, it's not fair on your clients or yourself.
She may run away with the idea that she 'can do nails' start up with a fleabay kit and ruin your reputaion by telling ppl you trained her ( I don't mean to sound harsh but why should anybody, despite their circumstances, be allowed a ticket that enables them to do this).

Good luck to her and I hope her circumstances improove.

Hi Del,

Yes, The thought had crossed my mind that she might want to become a "have a go" tech without any qualifications.

I also felt a bit miffed that having spent £1000's on courses that anyone can expect to get educated for free.

I think I will direct her to this site and let her sort it out for herself. I don't think she fully appreciates, that not only is it the cost of the education, but also to aquire a full kit of products.

I was just really was looking for confirmation that I had given her the correct advise.

Thanks

No problems

I've found the info given here is usually enough to sort out the serious 'wanabe' nail techs from the ones that want a 'free ride'
I have so many asking me and thinking it's an easy way to make money
They usually come back to me and say 'wow I didn't realise there was so many different courses and so much to learn'.

If she goes to the job center or one of these careers places she might even find herself eligable for some kind of funding to help her with her training costs.

I think you absolutely right in your response. She was out of line to badger you when you fully explained why you would not be teaching her. Especially when you owe her no explanation in the first place. And giving her sob story (whether it true or not) in the hopes for sympathy and a change in your mind about your decision I think also rude. When I was living in an expensive city and was being fired because I was too clean, I didn't whine to them, "but my mom died when I was 20, I have no one to help me while I find another job!"

This is just all my opinion. Take it with a grain of salt.

I think you have done right. I wouldn't be keen on being watched either.
As for Essential Nails, she wont be able to do a conversion with CND as CND do not recognise CND.
I did EN first at home found my love for nails and am now booked on the foundation CND course.

I also think your suggestion of contacting the college is a good idea they may be able to help her x
