Hi Everyone!! Im New To This Site, Was Wondering If Anyone Can Help With Something That I Have Tried And Tried.. And Tried Getting Into So Much!! I Am Very Interested In Traing To Perform The Above Treatments Aswell As The Wide Variety Of Treatments That I Am Already Competent In But Every Website States That U Have To Be, At Least A Nurse To Perform Them, I Am Very Disheartened As I Am A Successful Beauty Therapist And Obviously Love The Beauty Industry And Would Love To Expand My Knowledge And Abilities To More Advanced Levels. I Know That Replies Will Probably Simply Confirm The Bad News I Have Already Got From The Sites But Any Info Whatsoever Will Be Very Much Appreciated, Thanyooooouuuuuu!!! X

Hi and welcome,

Sorry to p on your bonfire but yes, you do have to be a Nurse. (and imo too right!) sorry of that sounds a bit harsh. By April next year it will bo so legislated that even nurses will have strict guidelines to adhere to. It takes lots of practise and skill to perform these treatments too, I know of a few doctors that work in my area that have only done 1 days training and they are 'legal' to perform these treatments.
The nurse that I work with has over 20 years of experience as a Theatre sister and hospital manager in NHS and Private hospitals working with top surgeons in cosmetic/plastic surgery all over the world. I know that if I were to have any botox/filler treaments I would do as much homework as possible and I would only go to a medical practitioner.

There are far too many shady people practising from car parks at night e.t.c. So I am all for legislation.

As for laser, as far as I am aware, Therapists can use laser but you have to go on a course from the HCC.(if I am wrong on this please let me know. I have the correct details at work and this is just from my memory).

I don't mean this post to sound cruel, I am just telling it as it is.

I agree with this, even qualified practitioners balls up on these treatments at times and they have done this kind of thing for years.I would not want anyone other than a medically qualified person performing any of the mentioned procedures.
At the end of the day this legislation is in place to protect us.

Just to add a little spanner in the works- as a beauty therapist I had to study facial structure-bones and muscles and the structure of the skin in great depth and am still studying. Nurses do not focus so much on the skin structure in their wide training.

Giving injections can surely be learnt by anyone (trainee nurses have to start somewhere!) I have been given bad injections by many a nurse as they just have to jab them in whereas beauty therapists (especially those with electrolysis diplomas) spend their time using their hands at varying pressures and are aware of their touch.

People obviously prefer these treatments when they are less "medicalised" thus these doctors/nurses come into salons to perform these treatments. If Sarahmarie was trained in the same way these nurses/doctors are for these treatments then why should she not be able to perform them as well as the next person. I'm sure there isn't a large amount of "botox/filler injection training" for a normal nurse, just those who decide to persue this root.

This said I don't agree with fillers and botox except for medical reasons (eg disfiguation in burns vicitms. :)

I dont think people necessarily prefer these treatments 'less medicalised',I think it's just there aren't many hospitals that do botox etc.Nurses may not be trained as much in the skin anatomy and facial muscles as we are, however I would assume that if they were to carry out botox ect that they would receive more than enough training in the facial anatomy area. These people are medically qualified we are not.If any contra-action were to arise from the injection we would not know how to deal with it.They would because they are medically qualified.I personally think that this type of procedure be carried out by a medically trained person. If I were to have Botox:eek: I would not really want a beauty therapist carrying out the treatment,I would want to feel safe in the knowledge that if I were to have any adverse reaction I was in the hands of a medically qualified person ,be it doctor or nurse.JMHO :)

Are the people who perform it at the trade shows (saw it at the NEC being done) nurses?

just wondering - i didn't think about it before.....

I dont know,I'm assuming they are if the only way you can be trained is if you are a nurse.

For this to work the therapist would need to be backed up by a professional medical team, just as the nurse would be. Maybe this would not be right for every beauty therapist however I also feel that there should be a definition made between a therapist that performs advanced treatments, with extensive training and one who is just starting out or conforms to beauty therapist stereotypes.

Lets say Mrs x decides to do nurses training to carry out botox, just studying for this one aim- great you would go to her confidently for treatment although she could not advise you on other options of skin care that may mean you didn't need the botox or ways you can enable the results to last longer. Mrs x is rich and happy.

Now lets say in a different senario Mrs Y a beauty therapist does a course that covers all that is involved to learn how to carry out botox just as she would if she did nurses training, but still has the name "beauty therapist." Mrs Y learns quicker as her training is backed up by her previous knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the face. Mrs Y can provide long term aftercare for her client promoting healthy skin and in some cases encourages her client to go down another root when botox is not yet needed. Mrs Y is rich and has extended her knowlege and job satisfaction. She can be sure she is doing the right thing for her clients as she is not under pressure to provide botox to those who don't really need it. Mrs Y pioneers as a new type of therapist.

:)

I have actually had a client beg me on many occasions to learn to perform botox as she would rather come to me than go to the clinic she goes to. But I have told her it is not possible and have explained my feelings on the matter of botox. :)

Hi Sarah Marie

why dont you fill in more details on your profile so we can here more about what you do and where you work etc.

You never know what business it may bring!

I've done a bit of research for you. It seems you may be able to perform fillers (you may know already but you could do semi-perminant make-up too, something you didn't list). It seems you will need to contact the individual companys you would want to get your products from to see what their policy is.

If you go to http://www.dh.gov.uk/PolicyAndGuidance/HealthAndSocialCareTopics/CosmeticSurgery/fs/en

And choose A-Z list

you can look up Restalyne for example and read what the regulations are.
