I have just did a patch test on a client due to return tomorrow night for a lash/brow tint. She has eczema and acne.

I did the usual test by applying some tint to the back of her ear. My question is, should the client feel any discomfort, e.g. burning or itching. What would I advise the client to do to help the discomfort. i.e. apply a certain cream or if severe, antihistamines?

Obviously if there was a reaction I would not do the treatment but it has dawned on me that we were never told at college what to do if the client had a reaction to the test itself.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

I think any reaction, redness, itching that might be experienced by a patch test will clear quickly by its self as it is only applied to a very small area. i think a reaction in the eye area would be very painfull, red, sore and swollen and would look far worse. As yet i have never had a client have a reaction to a patch test for lash tinting im sure the reaction on an arm or behind the ear would be far less drastic and disapear quickly.

I tell them that if they are concerned about the level of reaction to go and see their GP or a pharmacist to get proper advice.

I too have never had a client that has a reaction to the tint test. I always advised my clients that if they do have a reaction it will feel sore, slightly inflammed, maybe itchy, look red. To relieve this never rub the area and put a cold compress on the area to relieve the reaction and seek medical advise if concerned.

In 12 years I've only ever had one person react to a tint test, and she just found it a bit itchy. It cleared up quickly with a soothing cream. I have however seen a reaction to an eyelash tint in one of the first salons I worked in. The head therapist/owner never did tests as she said it was like turning money away, but I refused to tint without tests. Anyway, one day a lady came back in with eyes red & swollen like ping-pong balls, she could barely open them & they were running with tears. Oddly she never made that much of a fuss, even though I hinted she ought to! It certainly made me realise how important they are!

I have to say that I am alarmed that you never received any information at college on what to do in the event of a tint reaction! It beggars belief that this information was not part of your college notes as this is info that one would need to know in order to pass the course!

Signs of reaction would be redness, swelling, itching, burning or more severely blistering. I have suffered from facial eczema for many years and have not had a reaction to the tint or peroxide. Chances are your client will be fine but a topical antihistamine/soothing cream shoul help.

It is advisable to keep an eyebath in your 1st aid box in the event of a reaction during the tint procedure.
