I keep practising doing a manicure on family but it takes me so long! I think maybe im trying to hard to get it all perfect and cant seem to reduce my timings.......ok were talking 2 -3 hours from start to finish (not including a massage)! Its a good job my family are so patient hey..I just cant understand how anyone can do a manicure including polish in just 45 minutes...how do you do it?!

it takes a lot of practise. it took me ages when i first started but can now do a manicure in 45 mins and a revarnish in 20min/30mins depending on how much shaping the nail needs.

tell us your step by step for a manicure, you may be spending too long on 1 thing xx

I think you are like me, a bit of a perfectionist. Although I never took that long, I think an hour and a half was the longest.

I got over it by only allowing a certain amount of time per nail and then reducing that over time and it does work. I am now down to an hour including massage and exfoliation.

Good luck.

It is possible, but you have to keep you head down and dont stop when talking.
Family and friends I always seem to take longer because we're always chatting away.

Thats so true, no eye contact and talk and work, i'm a real hand talker and have to emphasise things by waving my hands about, this was a hard habit to break:lol:. I'm also a bit of a perfectionist, but believe me your timings will come down, its all a confidence thing keep at it you'll get there in the end xx:)

Well i start off with shaping the nails, then i apply a cuticle softener and i do spend a lot of time on the cuticles...i push back the cuticles...remove the pterygium off the nail plate and nip away any overgrown cuticle...i probably end up doing a bit more filing as by then theyll be lil stray bits appeared! Then you can guarantee that after theyve washed their hands ill see some more cuticle to take off! Then once ive finished faffing about its onto polishing! lol

I hope so cos its ridiculous how long i take lol thanx for everyones advice.

So lets get this straight, all you do is file, cuticles, soak and polish? And its taking you 2-3 hours!?

What you should be aiming for with that sort of basic manicure is around 30 mins (ish). Cos its basic, thats all!

This is what I would do, sanitise the hands, soak, file nails, cuticle work, nip if nessarcary, there may be a few rough edges, buff them off, base coat, enamel top coat, speed spray finished!

I think you are obviously taking too much time to do wach step of the manicure, which is fine for friends and family who dont mind sitting to help you out, but not when its a paying client!

Just keep going hun, practice, practice, practice, getting those times down! You'll soon get there!

I offer 3 types of Manicure:
~express manicure (30 mins)
~classic manicure (45mins-1hr)
~spa manicure (1hr 30mins approx)

Dont worry too much about it, as others have said you are obviously a perfectonist!

Erm...(blushing with humiliation)! yes I know that i am taking far too long..altho I never thought of my manicure routine as a basic one...as far as im aware im doing a full manicure apart from not doing a massage. I do spend alot of time trying to get it perfect because I want to do it properly and do a good job. Shouldnt you file before you soak? As is it not more harmful to file nails after they have been soaked due to the fact that the moisture can disturb the natural bonds between the nail plate so there is a risk of causing the nails to seperate?
Thanx for your help anyway...im really gonna try to do it quicker next one i do in a couple of days time lol

I would file then soak.:)

where about in lincs are you based hun? as you always pop round to my house and I can give you a few pointers xxx

start to use your time more , while you doing the client consultation, apply the cuticle softener, then push back cuticles, then buff plate using a sponge then shape, cut most the length with clipper file into shape, i dont give ppl the option i do the square with soft sides if they object then fine do the oval or whatever they want.
Also, while polish is drying do the hand massage it will save time waiting obviously dont
rub the nail itself. then finish off weith cuticle oil.
30min tops.
also you need to get fast dry opi for quicker dry time saves you so much effort waiting.

Hi

Well I don't soak at all!! This is my routine for a full manicure (not luxury or express) the maximum ammount of time I allow for it is 30 mins not inclcuding a polish.

1 get client to wash her hands then apply cuticle remover.
2 Fill out client record card
3 Remove cuticle from the nail plate, then get client to wash hands again
4 ensure clients hands are dry, then nip any stray cuticle and generally tidy up.
5 File to shape (buff if necessary)
6 Exfoliation
7 Massage
8 Polish finish

As Gordan Ramsey would say DONE

If i am doing a spa manicure at stage 6+7 are blended together as i use the exfoliating crystals as stage 6 then add the activator and use this to do my massage.
My spa manicure are 45 mins not including polish to allow for a paraffin mask to be applied.

I remember when a manicure used to take me an hour though x It does come but it just takes time.

As for soaking take a look at this thread : http://www.salongeek.com/nail-geek/20364-manicure-without-soaking.html

You may find it of interest x

I wasnt having a go hun honest!!

I only soak in my Spa Manicure as I dont see the need for it in my express or classic!

Sorry if I offended you, just trying to give a bit of advice thats all! xxx:hug:
