Hi

I'm a newly qualified Nail Technician and am doing UV Gels at present. I have gone over my prep a thousand times but when I do gel overlays on natural nails, the gel is fine and lasts for weeks. When I put gel on tips however, they are lifting and pinging off within days!!! I use IBD products and don't know what else to do, I feel like giving up before I even start!! I know this has been mentioned on various sites continuously but I thought maybe someone on here would have a different slant on things. Help!!

Are you buffing the shine off the tip? You need to use no smoother than a 180 grit board for this. This is all I can think of as gel won't stick to a shiney surface. Hope this helps! :)

Zone 3 is no different whether using tips or doing a NNO so if there is no lifting when doing a NNO there shouldn't be when using tips...are you touching the nails when applying the tips...leaving traces of oil on the nail...??? after applying tips and blending them i remove any dust and use my nail plate cleanser (scrubfresh) again on the natural nail only...(NOT ON THE TIP)...this way i know the nail is squeaky clean ready for my application.

I have only just started with gels reacently but if its only happening when you extend the nail past the natral free edge is it cos:
your making them to long
not enough apex
or not capping,
i dont know but you could check if its any of them to blame ,

Are you using clear tips? If you are using white tips the gel may not be curing properly, as it can't cure them from the underside.

Thanks for the replies, I ensure I do not touch the nail bed after dehydrating so it can't be that. I haven't buffed over the tips, I can try that, my prep is no different for a natural nail overlay to a tip overlay so I really can't see why they start to lift. It's not even the after care of the client as they come off me too! I have had nno's on for weeks now and they are fine but I know as soon as I put a tip on they will lift. I have used clear, white, patterned and coloured tips and they all lift.

Would you rather use resin to stick the tip on or glue? I was taught with resin but think this may be one of the problems as its maybe not as sticky as glue? (really clutching at straws now!!):irked:

Didnt quite understand the comment about white tips not curing on the underside.

Hi there again. I would change over to glue and make sure you buff the tips as well. As I said before gel will not stick properly to the shiny surface of the tip so you need to remove the shine, just as you would a natural nail. I am sure with these 2 things you will not have any more problems. :)

yep defo buff the tips hun. With the whites, coloured or patterned ones just do it very lightly, but gel do not adhere to a shiny surface.

About the gel not being cured properly on a white tip (or coloured for that matter) it's only a problem if you are using opaque gels (white etc.) the opaque gels needs to be cured from both sides to ensure proper curing. Well the gels I use (/used) do, don't know about all other gels...

So if you are using clear gel (or a sheer colour) now thwn I would say your problems is down to the tips not being buffed. By the way is it just on the tips lifting occures? If the lifting is various places on the nail, it could be the structure, and maybe even the thickness of the products.

just thought i would interject, ibd has a regular gel and a soakoff gel. is it possible you were using thr soakoff gel for nno's and did not switch to the buff off gel for extending? the soak off gel is not strong enough to extend the length of the nail and therefore would definitely lift/peel and ping off as youve described.

Thanks for replies, I will def try the buffing and glue instead of resin. The lifting happens around the cuticle and side areas of the nail. I ensure I dont get any on the skin and have tried varying thicknesses. I also don't use any of the soak off gels as I'm not that fussed on them so it can't be that. :irked:

thank you sooooooo much for the replies previously. I have taken all the hints on board and have also changed resin for glue and buffed the tips so the gel can stick and guess what???????????? They don't come off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks to everyone for their help, especially Shedunlop, top tip, really appreciate it!!!!!:)

Just another query, how many layers on average would you say you should put on gel tips?? I put on three but even though they go on quite thinly, they cure to be quite thick. Is this normal?? Thanks again!!
