ohh geez here goes lol. I have inherited a client from another nail tech and to cut a long story kinda short she had her first appointment with me 5 weeks ago (p&W rebalance) any how her nail on her ring finger seemed to have a bit of trauma, little bit yellow and bruised kind off middle of nail plate. I asked client if aanything had happend bashing banging etc,, she said she caught it and bent nail back but acrylic did not snap, she commented on how last tech said her nail seemed to be lifting (onycholysis) from the bed.

I continued with maintenance and kept nail short and thin and advised to keep an eye on it, she booked appointment for 4 weeks (I advised 2-3., but was used to other techs monthly apts)

I visited lady yesterday for her appointments and her nail was now green black and yellow, I informed that nail will have to come off for me to look properly. This done and buffed (also rang my educateor Julia lol) I was not happy as stain was not going atal, I could not understand how when I applied my nail fresh there seemed to be liquid under stain, kinda moving iygwim, lol, when all acrylic was gone,,, yes I know I shoulod of thought I looked down the barrel of the nail and her nail had completley lifted of her bed apart from sidewalls, (from hyponychium to middle of plate, side walls still attached and eponychium) the bacteria and maybe fungal was under nail plate..

I refused to do this nail informed her to see gp or go top chemist, but,,,,, she was so deperate as she was going out tomorrow and as all you nail techs know "can not go out with no nail on lol"

I done a very thin nno with opaque pink which you could still see the bacteria through this, and got her to sign a disclaimer.

What would of you all done. I panicked all my training went right out of window lol,,, thank god julia (my educator) was not having her tea, lol

Thoughts guys???:confused::confused:

Well to be honest from what you say i personally would have totally refused to put anything on that nail the second time round no matter how desperate she was...did this woman not think to contact you before her next appointment if her nail was turning black?!!!

The first time round all the product should have been removed completely off that nail before contemplating putting any back on so the bacteria could die, I would want to keep a very close eye on a nail that had even a very small amount of onycholysis due to the risk of bacteria getting under the natural nail plate and at the first sign of any discolouration/infection whatsoever or that the onycholysis appeared to be getting worse then the gel/acrylic would need to come off.

I hope she isnt going to wait another 4 weeks for you to look at it, you did the right thing by removing the old product, scrubfreshing, only putting product back on very thin and getting her to sign a disclaimer..perhaps you can contact her and encourage her to see you again soon just so you can check on it.

Hey, at least you know now what the onset of a bacterial infection looks like now and you will be able to deal with it straight away if you come across it again.

Make sure your client keeps a close eye on it and calls you if there is any change, although it should be fine now that it has been dealt with.

It's great that you were able to call your educator for advice at the time of the appointment. :hug:

I have rang client and she said feels much better. I did notice that it is growing up the nail so I am pretty sure that all will be well soon, she has bought curanail, also I am popping over later for myself to have a little nosey :) xx

I had onycholysis on by big toe a couple of years ago, same thing it was only attatched around the side walls it was exremly black and i was convinced it was going to fall off. I went on holiday at the time and was in the pool all day everyday (as you do lol) and to my amazement within about 5 or 6 days the bacteria had practically gone. A feew weeks later my nail seemed to have reatatched it self to my nail bed. Top and bottom of it is maybe the chlorine helped this maybe you could try and advise your client to go swimming.......silly I know but it may help, and my onycholysis never returned hth xx

Actually now that you've said this, my boyfriends toenails went black last year from him going running and wearing rubbishy shoes - when we went on holiday and he was spending a lot of time in and out of the sea or the pool, the black cleared Up a lot!
