Hi there :)

As i am just starting out it all seems like money money money at the moment! I am just starting to build up clients so things are tight money wise. After all the money on training/kit and all the items for my room i have converted at home i keep thinking of more things i need to buy lol! I`m sure you guys must remember this stage - the initial outlay is huge (mainly cos i have not bought cheapo stuff so I`m hoping the clients will feel the benefits of that) BUT I have not invested in nail varnishes (besides basic french) and was hoping to buy some good quality varnishes that dont cost the earth - i have looked into the usual (nsi/creative/essie/jessica/china glaze) but in order to bulid up a starter selection - wow it`s a huge cost. so can anyone recommend a good starter brand as I want to buy about 20-30 bottles and hopefully when i start making more i can upgrade or would you guys recommend just trying to scrape the money for better brands?

thanks in advance

I would definitely suggest either INM or Creative. They are both wonderful polishes with a beautiful color line. I started with the basics as well, 2 pinks, 2 reds, 2 browns, etc. I kept it really basic but covered the spectrum - it doesn't have to cost too much. I know how expensive it is to start up, but you really want to make sure you use a quality polish so it doesn't end up a gooey mess with poor color coverage. Quality is so much more imporant than quantity!

Good luck!

Your so right!

hello Karen

I know what you mean - the set up costs are humungous! i LOVE opi and if you call them (number off Home - Lena White) you can get an account by ordering £50 worth of polishes - believe me you won't be disappointed -their range rocks!

I am a fan of OPI polishes and you can purchase them quite reasonably priced if you are near a Sally's or Bondlink (don't know where in the UK you are).

I agree most definitely that you need to go with quality rather than quantity with whatever range you decide on. Rather start with 15 superior polishes than 30 cheapy ones.

Right from the start it is better to use a long lasting, excellent coverage nail enamel, rather than lose clients who think they can get better elsewhere if their polish does not last on their nails.

thanks all

I am looking into things and hoping to have my collection sooner rather than later - thanks for the comments - hopefully i shall MAKE money one day lol

Doesn't that mean that your clients can also go in their and buy their OPI polishes you have recommended to them, at the cheaper wholesale price??

I don't want to hijack this thread, but do many of you Tech's working in a Home Salon retail a lot of polish???

Don't you find that the average client, will love you to do her polish, as you do it soooo much better than her, and it will last at least a week without chipping etc. Therefore she just waits until her next appointment for you to change her polish.

Therefore when starting out, wouldn't it be best to buy from a good range of professional use polishes, (only available from YOU/Salons)as has been mentioned, but only buy in one or 2 of each colour group, for use in manicures and then guage whether your clients are going to buy. Then you can order in more.

There is no sense in buying in a full rack of polishes to gather dust on your desk, until you have sussed out your clientel.
Just my opinion.

Hi thanks for the reply

I did not really consider the retail aspect - I just want to be able to offer a small range in case any of my clients want anything different after a manicure instead of the usual french look so buying 1 or 2 in each colour group is what I intend doing.
