Hi everyone Merry Christmas.

Hope you could all give me a bit of advice. I'm training at the moment with Creative nails, doing a L&P foundation course:). I had my first (out of friends and family) client yesterday, I went round to her house and asked her what she would like and she said French white tips.
When I looked at her nails they were quite short, so I advised her it would be better to have natural tips on with a sculpted smile line and opaque neutral powder to make her nail bed look longer, And she said yes that's fine. When I had finished she said she liked them but does prefer white tips even though they do make her nails look shorter.

I did my friends nails the day before who is a nail biter the same way and she loved them she said she was so happy with how long her nail bed looked:)!!
My question is what do clients prefer white tips or sculpted white smile? I have just been doing what i've been trained to do, sculpt a white smile line. My friend who is a nail technician said i'm making it harder for myself I should just use white tips on my clients so it's quicker and easier. I do think the sculpt smile line does look better but what do clients want ? xxx

Hi Tracey .. the fact is that 99 out of 100 clients don't know what they want and that is the truth. These clients prefer to be guided by us as, hopefully as professionals, we have an 'eye' and a sence of design and know what results can be achieved with opaque powders (congratulations by the way for making a good choice for her). Your client is just used to seeing something else and may take a couple of weeks to get used to the 'new' look of a balanced pretty nail rather than an unbalanced porn star looking nail.

Some clients WILL ask for white tips as they have never before been given the choice of having anything else (poor things). Your friend is wrong and don't be guided by her. It is no easier to use white tips .. only easier for her as she obviously does not offer the choices that you do (perhaps a bit of professional jealousy happening there).

You keep guiding your clients on the path that will give the prettiest results for them and don't listen to other techs that take the easy way out and just put the same old thing on every single client because that is the only thing they know how to do. Set yourselves apart from the ordinary and offer the extrordinary!! Good Luck.

This is a question of personal taste. I, personally, do not use tips and sculpt everything, but when I had new clients they were uncertain of what I meant. They were, and still are, fascinated when watching me, they think it is so clever. Some people will prefer tips as this is what they are used to and some don't want tips put on at all. It is great that you feel confident enough to advise clients to have an extended nail bed and scultped tip so I wouldn't be put off by any client and certainly not by anyone else telling you that you are making things hard for yourself. If there is an easier way that looks just as professional then why not, but on short nails, tips can make their fingers look stumpy and the nails look as if they were done at home! Lol!!

Carry on as how you have started and I can see you having a very successful career in nails.

Have a wonderful Christmas! :)

I think some people do just want a really false look in nails. In a similar way some like their really false looking hair extensions, orange tans and unusually shaped high ****s.
Really long thick eyelashes are going to be another thing soon because of extensions and the very precise dark eyebrows.I think we are just in a time of everything looking a bit precise and unnatural its just a fashion trend.
I have definately had a move away from french lately im doing more colour manicures and gels.Youngsters still want the white french tips though because they are such an obvious look and that is what they want unfortunately the nss look is fashionable in certain quarters.

Hi Thank you so much for the replys. I said to my partner when I started this course that I don't just want to be a nail technician I want to be really good nail technician, And you have put me back on the right track, So thank you so much, I'm going to carry on doing it my way and let the client see how beautiful nails can look!!!! I would just like to say that this site is brilliant I have learnt so much from reading these forums id be lost without it.

I agree but why should anyone prefer white tips to white powder?? Beats me.

Hope you all have a lovely Christmas and a Happy new year;-)

I guess because at least they know they are going to get a smile line. Many techs (lazy ones who haven't put any effort in after their training)just literally do a line of white across without any effort to put in a smile .The other way clients often know is the air brushed white.
There is so much ignorance out there.

Well isn't that a sad state of affairs for our industry.

Well i guess its the same as all industrys you have the people that love and take pride in the work they produce and others who are just happy to do the bare minimum with the bare minimum of training and never learn anymore. The public don't know any better because most info in mags etc comes from so called beauty journalists who don't have a clue what they are talking about.

Thankyou Gigi for giving me a laugh with the porn star reference! I will giggle about that all Christmas. I have often wondered what these nails remind me of and that is it!

Have a fabulous Christmas everyone! :)
