Hi all :)
I'm thinking of opening the salon on Sundays making it a 7 day opening.. Ive ran it by a couple of the staff just to get an idea of reaction and they said they'd work every other or one a month or something arranged like that.. To be honest I'd only like to do every other! Don't really want to kill my self doing 7 day weeks ha!
So I was thinking about the fairest way of doing it? Can I enforce that everyone works on a Sunday (not every!) or do they have a right to refuse?
- on the week they're working the Sunday, they have the Saturday off?

Any replies would be very much appreciated! Thanks fellow geeks :) xx

over here its really common , a lot of people like to due to childcare issues etc.. but its usually part timers who dont work much during the week , i have done it but it was a salon that wanted me there 8.8 on a sat and 9-6 on a sunday which was just too much for me ,
i am thinking at the mo to start going in our salon for a few hours on a sun just for walk ins etc..
hope you get it sorted hun , as i think its a good idea , the whole thing of places shutting on a sunday etc.. seems really old fashioned to me now , coz everything here is open all the time , even sundays is like 8 - 10 pm for supermarkets etc.. , lol

Are your staff self employed or employed?
If I was employed then I'd be happy to take my turn doing a Sunday knowing it would mean that week I'd get the Saturday of, but if I was self employed I would not want to do it, unless I was garenteed (sp) my book would be full.
This is because when I worked in a salon, self employed, my busiest days were Friday and Saturday and when I tried a few Sundays I found I was lucky to get a couple of clients in, infact I spent most of my Sunday cleaning, makeing stock lists and doing my books.
I prefered to have the Monday of.

Remember, you are materially alterating the existing contract of employment (if they are employed and not self employed) which I believe you are entitled to do providing you go through the right process. My advice to you would be confirm what you want to do with an HR/Legal specialist to make sure that you do not fall foul of the law. Otherwise if you do get it wrong you could risk being pulled into an employment tribunal, which could prove expensive. Tribunals are heavily biased towards the employee and not the employer. No matter how friendly your staff may appear today on this issue, we do live in a suing culture.

I dont know if this helps at all, but when I worked in a salon on Sundays as an employee I didnt get paid any extra, not sure if this is correct but I was too naive then to question anything.
Have you thought about doing a survey on your clients to see if they would like to have an appointment on a Sunday? x

suppose it just depends on your staff too, some might like to work both sat and sun and the following week have both off id certainly prefer to get the whole weekend off even if i had to work the full weekend before the week but thats just me, or even maybe every 3rd weekend on or whatever depends on how many staff you have, so that might not be possible for your salon

If I were to have my own salon I too would be open Sundays I would probablly open 8-8 7 days week.

I would assume that if they are employed then maybe there's some premium rate of pay I'm
pretty sure you can't make them work Sundays ESP as it was not originally what was stated when you employed them. If they are self employed i don't think you have a say when they work as they are not employed by you, they rent space only.

I might be wrong though xxx
