Hi
Been years since I've treated a client who's pregnant and was just wondering whether they would be contra-indicated with certain treatments? I dont do any electrical treatments.

Certain oils in aromatherpay shouldn't be used during pregnancy, spa treatments are a no no,other than that(since you dont do electrical treatments)everything else is fine really.HTH

I think it's important to be guided by your product companies guidelines because if you go ahead and then there is an issue you wont be covered with your insurance:eek:
We do non surgi facelifts and our guidelines are not to carry them out in pregnancy,I dont see how it could affect a pregnancy but if a client was to miscarry I suppose she would be wanting answers and quick( and quite rightly so)so be guided and adhere to the guidelines as it's just not worth taking risks.HTH

Probably to do with hot flushes and not cutting off circulation with the wrapping and also pretty uncomfortable to be restricted in movement when pregnant also maybe the ingredients could cross the placenta.

Definately dont massage their ankles in a pedi as this can start labour apparantly xxx

Yes advised not to wrap because of circulation..With regards to the massaging ankles bringing on labour is this at the end of pregnancy? As with reflex parts of the feet respond to parts of the body ..

I think is you need to becareful and cover yourself as if the client miscarries they will look for a reason as to y..If i didnt do this that the other i would be ok.. Its only natural to do this.

What treatments do you offer so we can be more specific in our replies

Hi
Be careful with whatever you do in the first trimester (3 months). My youngest daughter is now 7 months so I'm quite recent to this query. As was said before no electrical treatments, no clary sage oil but seriously max out on relaxing treatments. Also no spray tanning on breast feeding clients. x

I've heard this too but have yet to find some medical evidence of this actually being the case. I am sure if it was true overdue women would be rubbing their ankles like mad- if only it was that simple!

At work we only offer pregnant ladies treatments past the first trimester, and then we offer pregnancy massage, avoiding scalp massage, ankle massage or firm pressure near hips to avoid damaging the muscles as they over stretch. We also offer facials, manicures and pedicures and hopi ear candles. Posted via Mobile Device

There is a pressure point about 4 fingers above the inner ankle bone (SP 6) that stimulates the pituitary gland to release Oxytocin, the hormone that when released, stimulates the uterus into contracting, and therefore starting labour.

The body would have to be pretty much ready to go into labour....like all other methods of bringing on labour, if it ain't ready, it won't make much of a difference! The likelihood of it causing early birth is negligible.

Most reputable acupressure or TCM sites will tell you about it. And I know several women who have used it to good effect in late (overdue) pregnancy to help things along.

It's really more of a black art than a science, but I think the point here is, that it can bring (not necessarily will) bring on labour, and because of that the advice not to massage the ankles, is most likely the insurance company covering it's backside!

Ha ha Weezie this was my point to my boss  We could actually invent a treatment to bring on labour! xxx

I've had advanced pregnancy massage training and pregnant women are not delicate little flowers that cannot be touched! Not sure about the aromatherapy side or body wraps etc (not something I do).

But yes, be careful round the ankles light massage is fine, if you are massaging you can do deep work in the upper back, lower back lighter pressure obviously. Its common sense stuff. I massage in the first trimester, if a baby is going to miscarry, it will miscarry. It would be a very rare case that a beauty treatment will make a baby miscarry. You may want to ask your client if she has a history of miscarriages in which case I would wait to treat her after the 12 week point, (just so she can't blame you if something happens!) hth :green:

Jade, why do you not carry out scalp massage? I've not come across this before.

Just a quick point remembered from my aromatherapy class years ago definately no clary sage and definately definately NO juniper or juniperberry as both these oil induce labour whether it is late stages or not
