Hi guys I know this may sound stupid but has anyone any advise to offer me as I had my Lhasa apso bitch of 10 months spayed yesterday and I just feel so helpless. She keeps jumping like she has been trodden on and continuously licking and scratching with her back leg and know it is probably what they all do just upsetting me to see her so agitated. I have rang the vet who said she had a painkiller injection and shouldn't really need another as she will just get used to the sensation, she wont walk about but if needs to, runs in short bursts I have carried her out to toilet and she had a small wee this morning. I slept downstairs with her last nite as I was afraid she would try jumping on and off the bed and burst her stitches. I am supposed to stop her from licking the wound site - impossible. Do you think the stitches may be too tight or any advise as to what I can do to make her more comfortable? I am reluctant to call the vet again as they will think I am a lunatic.

a plastic cone collar will stop her from licking the wound...she wont be able to reach

Ring the vet, so what if they think you are a lunatic, you love your pet and it is hurtfull for you and her to see her in pain.
You are paying or have paid so don't be embarrased, speak to the vet direct who done the operation and if you are still not happy take her up to get her checked.
Any good vet should be able to put your mind at rest and have time to answer your queries and concerns and also should be happy that you love your pet the way you do.
I know I would! :)

If you believe she's in pain or suffering (and it certainly sounds like something is not right) then take her back to the vets and ask someone to check her over, who cares if they think you're a lunatic, she needs you to speak up for her.

let us know how she gets on

Ive not much knowledge about dogs, esp with this procedure, but their like your kids, so if you are not happy with the advice from the vet, eg... gut reaction, then maybe get a 2nd opinion from another vet?,

I know its no comparison, but I went through a simalar situation with my son, ( not satisfied with the advice given from doctor) so I vented my concerns, and wham he ended up in hospital !!
My point is trust you're own judgement  hope your dog be ok soon

Right thats it I am going to call them up i asked for a collar and was told that it would distress her so to see how she gets on. will post back an what happens. Thanks everyone you know how it is.

Hi hun, i would definately get a collar for her no matter what the vets said, if she licks at the wound and opens the stitches....its not good, that happened with my mums cat a while back and she had to be stapled shut in the end. Get the collar and speak to the vets and tell them you are not happy, i have had my dog Nova spayed and she didn't act like that also they sould have sent you home with pain killers for her it should be all included in the price! I hope she gets better soon, Jo.xxx

Hi just want to thank you all for your advice and support.
Vet has given me a collar which she is now wearing and jumping round like a bucking broncho! (a new worry now lol).
checked her stitches they are fine & not too tight said the breed temperament is a little "poofy" and they pretty much expected a reaction like she is having (why didn't they warn me) she had a long effecting painkiller injection yesterday afternoon which should carry her through till tom when she should be a little better if I am still concerned then to take her back tom eve surgery. I will just see how she goes.

I do hope your doggy settles down, poor baby! We had our St Bernard spayed about 3 years or so ago, and she was fine; we've also had 6 cats spayed (and one tom cat castrated) with no problems. However if it's normal for Lhasa Apso's to react badly afterwards then I guess that's par for the course with the breed??? I'd still be worried though; if your dog is still in pain then pester the vets! They shouldn't think you're mad; after all, it's your pet, and it should be a routine operation, so any reactions or pain afterwards should be taken seriously!
