Question on Courses

Can you tell me please, what exactly is a difference between a Beauty Therapist and a Beauty Specialist. I apologise for sounding a bit thick but there ya have it, it doesnt explain it on any of the Beauty School websites i have been looking at. The only thing i see missing from the specialist course is massage so does it mean if you did a massage course afterwards you'd be a Beauty Therapist? Im confused.com !

I think that if i remember correctly they use those terms for the NVQ/VTCT courses. From just looking at my colleges prospectus i can see that for the VTCT course 'Beauty Specialist' is the name for a Level 2 qualification in beauty therapy. 'Beauty Therapist' is the term for a Level 3 qualification in Beauty therapy. Level 2 qualifications are the basic skills that a therapist needs to have eg, facials, waxing & eye treatments and level 3's are more body massage, body electrical treatments and spa treatments. Dont worry you feel like its a minefield at first! Hth.

Tbh I dont think it would matter. I think that if you are a level 2 qualified therapist you are a beauty therapist alongside a level 3 qualified one. Its just that the level 3 beauty therapists hold a higher qualification in their field, as they have undertaken more training. A lot of salons specify that you need a minimum of level 3 in beauty therapy to consider you for a post. A lot of therapists take their basic beauty therapy training, whether this be a level 2 or level 3 qualification and build on it with extra separate courses, such as eyelash extensions, spray tanning etc. Hth.

Its strange what different tiltles mean!

I always thought a "beautician" was level 2, "beauty therapist" was level 3 and a "beauty specialist" just specialises in 1 or 2 treatments.

From reading the other replies I guess I am probably wrong now!

Definitely agree that level 2 with a massage qualification isn't the same. On level 3 you learn body electrical treatments alongside spa treatments, business tecnhiques, diet and nutrition and more in depth anatomy and physiology to name just a few.
