Does it cost?
and where do I do it?

I have googled new business registration but each site seems to say something different and there are sooo many different sites, how do you know which one is best or legitimate?

(I am renting a beauty room and will be working from there)

Hi, I will be renting a room shortly and will be in the same boat as you.
I was only planning on informing the tax office to see what they advise me to do.
Do you have to register your business? The only company I have heard of is companies house. So thought that was the main one ??

You only have to register your business name if you don't want anyone else to use your business name.

It's not too expensive to register though

you only need to register with companies house if you are a Ltd company.

As long as you inform HMRC that you are now self employed and make arrangements to pay your N.I contributions etc then that should really be all you need to do aside from making sure you have the correct insurances etc 2!

Hope this helps

Probably the best place to look is the Business Link website, Business support, information and advice | Business Link - it's a government site with information for people wanting to start a business or who are already running a business.

You certainly do need to register with HMRC though if you are self-employed - and within 3 months of starting self-employed work - or they can fine you.

And you do only need to register your company name with Companies House if trading as a limited company.

are you going to have an accountant? most will takecare of registering with taxman and national insurance etc etc for you.

Yes, accountants are worth their weight in gold! And always worth the reassurance that you get from knowing that your accounts will be that much more "kosher" too... and that they will chase you up as to when you need to make your next tax payment or fill in particular tax paperwork etc (as there is a fair bit of paperwork that needs doing for small businesses at particular times of the year)...

Thanks everyone :)

I think Im gonna get an accountant like you say. My brother has a great one, I will get his number and go see him.

Now I need to get my price list, poster, website and leaflets sorted. Busy weekend then?! lol
