hi im new to this so please be gentle on me as i could really do with some good advice ,i have been working in a hair slon self imployed as nail tech for two months and i provide all my own products, there is not much of client base so i am not earning much at the moment, the owner of the slon agreed 20/80 split with no contrct, as this is my first job in the nail industry i was very pleased at this opertunity, but now the owner has said that she has done her research and thinks that £150 is the going rate to rent nail bar full time:eek: this suprised me as i m only there three days a week and i do not have my own room just nail bar in the salon ,could someone plese give me there opinion regrding rent as i dont want to leave as i cant get a job else where due to lack of salon expereince, thanks geeks:biggrin:

When you are supplying all the products etc then while 20% is good 25% is normal and if you are very busy then 30% would be acceptable, so yes if you work out what you charge for a full set and how many sets you could do in a day and x by six days then £150 a week works out, I've put it this way so that you can go back to your salon owner with some facts of your own to show that if she has some patience, your current arrangement will net her more then the £150 a week she is looking for whilst still being fair to you because you will have a larger client base and with more experience and training, you will be charging more for a wider range of services. and will increase the days that you rent from her. Good start hun, now you just need to stick at it but remember if you move on, your clients will move with you:hug:

£150 a week would work out to £25 per day, which seems the going rate. I think most that rent, pay between £20-£25 per day.

HTH.

thanks for your advice me thinks she is getting a little greedy as i only earnt 25 quid for last weeknd and that was good as i never made any the week before would not mind paying rent but she is not willing to advertise or put up any sighns on the windows to say that i am there ,im lucky if i do a set of nails a day all money i make is going on stock, really want to stay but cant see how it would work ,thanks for your words of kindness x love this site cant believe only just found it xx

hun, when I started I gave 25% of my take and for that I got, advertising, her girls took my appointments for me and all the tea and coffee I could drink, I also go the normal staff discounts which I thought was very kind. She wanted a flat rate of £65 a day but I insisted that it stay as a percentage because some days I only had one client, or none . Busy times she made more then the £65 a day but on the quiet times, I didn't end up out of pocket. Stick to your guns hun, ask for a meeting, and take your appointment book with you to show her what you are doing, tell her you need to advertise and remind her that for her every penny she gets from you is pure profit on dead space. If she won't see reason, phone other hairdressers etc. in your area and tell them your terms and that you have a small client base to bring with you and then MOVE:lol: its your business, its down to you to make it work:hug:

She's charging you a full week's rent (and quite high if not in the High Street of a busy town IMO) whether you're working or not, could you share with another tech?

I charge £15 per day for agreed days, whether working or not, so say someone rents 3 days they pay £45 for those 3 days whether they are in or not......perchance I am too soft and should be making them pay for the whole week lol!

It's your business at the end of the day and I started out renting in a hair salon....albeit £65 per week....not per day! You can make it work if you want it to, you have a stready influx of women hair clients who you just need to turn on to nails.

I would try and negotiate with the owner as I am assuming you have family commitments which is why you are working part time.....if not, as already said, try some other hair salons and have your price to negotiate with them, not them dictating prices to you.

I went into the hair salon straight after finishing my VTCT.....yes I was naive but I went on a steep learning curve and took plenty more classes. You are very lucky to have found this site so soon into you nail career, it will make a world of difference to you....honestly, I wouldn't have my own salon today if it weren't for this site.

Hang on in there and go for it!
