i think my wireless internet conection may be being used by another computer, making my own computer struggle to connect to things. pages are taking forever to load.
my conection is unsecured, but i dont know how to seceure it so that only i am able to access it.
could anybody please help me . please spell it out in very simple terms because i know very little about computers. i have only just found out how to attatch photos in e-mails:o

This can be a pain in the a**e and i wish i knew how to help but i dont.

I have a friend who had the same problem but unsure how she sorted it.

I know when she comes mine with her lappy it says withing reach of a pc (obviously mine) but when she tries to piggy back me my pc wont allow it as i have my wireless router protected with a pass word.

Best bet is to ask seanny or maybe ruth mills, both are quite knowledgable with pcs. HTH

What make and model of router do you have? Also do you have an Ethernet cable you can connect it to your computer with? That can be *very* useful if you accidentally muck something up and find you can't connect via wireless any more!

The encryption I would recommend is called WPA or WPA2. Don't bother with WEP - it's way to easy to crack now. You will need to specify a password for it too. Mine is pretty impossible to crack as it's obscure to anyone who is not an insane geek!

Hiyah

I had this problem so I contacted Belkin the provider of my WIFI and they guided me through the whole set up via telephone, as when I tried to install the disc it skipped this step to my annoyance, it was well worth the 10 minute phone call as waiting for my hubby to look at it would of taken him longer tee hee!! :)

Hth :)

hi....
if you go into windows 'control panel'.......an option when you click on the start button in botton left corner (windows icon if using vista, then go into security centre and make sure your windows fire wall is on....this stops all incoming connections to your computer....

OMG  hunny you must get it secured NOW.

I have a wee manny who is a computer geek who did mine. I suggest you get one to secure yours ASAP.

Even if you have to pay it will be worth it or just anyone can gain access to your pooter.:eek::eek:

If I was a bit closer I'd offer to fix it for you. We have Wi-Fi here and the first thing I did when I got the router was to secure the network. Alas it's not the easiest thing to do if you are not a hard core computer geek!

thanks for all the help geeks.
i've found out a bit more what the problem is.
the house next door is owned by us and we rent it out. we installed a wireless system for them to use. it seems as if there is something wrong with theirs and they are logging on to my signal automatically coz its all they can find.
one of the guys who lives there knows quite a bit about puters. but hes away at the mo. when he comes back in a day or so we will ask him if he can sort things out.
i will save all this info for him.
thanks everyone, it was lovely of you to help.
