Does anyone rent a beauty room within a hairdressers who also has a young family to look after?? I have the opportunity to rent a room later this year, but do not want to put off trying to become pregnant this year also - just wondered if it was possible to manage the two?!? I am currently freelance, but would love the opportunity to rent my own room.
Thanks

I rent rooms in a hairdressers and my children are 14,11,and 4 its hard work and sometimes i do feel as if ive neglected my babies as i work 6 days

I suppose tis not as bad for me because my eldest is 14 and he does help look after little one but child fees are high.

I wish you well in your venture its a hard slog but its worth it in the end

Hiya, i rent treatment rooms i work 5 days a week i have three babies 5,3 and 1. so yes it is possible, as long as you and your OH are a good team. i'm fortunate in that my hubby is a postie so i do school/playgroup childminder runs in the am and he is finished in time to do the pm pick ups, its exhausting at times but we are all doing what we want and getting more family time then when one of us was working 9-5 daily. good luck with it all:)

I think the big thing here is, what is your support network like? If you have people to help out you'll be fine.

well my son is now 9 and I rent a room.
I work school hours most of the week, and 2 late nights and every other Saturday.

I've only started doing this as before I worked freelance and stated the hours I worked was in school hours.

I like to take him to school each morning and I pick him up 3 times a week, my in-laws pick him up 1 day and my husband picks him on 1 day.

It is very hard juggling everything, but when I was freelance, it meant I only went in for booked treatments, so managed to do housework, shopping and socialising inbetween.

Now I am renting, I try and remain on the premises for my opening hours, this has been a bit of a shock to the system for the whole family as we are now struggling with housework, washing/ironing, shopping etc. But its just about getting into a new routine.

I also love the fact that if I need time off to see school assembly or something, I just mark it out of the appointment book.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts, very kind of you to reply. I suppose it is very manageable as long as there is a suppport network around, which there would be. I am as keen as ever now to go for it, thank you!

I dont rent a room, but I do work from home. I have 2 children both in school, well one of them is currently mornings only, but after Easter she will be full time!

As yet, I havent had that call in the middle of a client 'Please come and get your child, hes been sick', and tbh my support network isnt that great at all, so I would have to rely on a neighbour to fetch my little one!

What I am trying to say, is the same as what others have said, if you have a fabulous support network then go for it.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

xxxxx:hug:

Sorry if I'm just repeating what others have said, but it absolutely depends on if you would have some to look after the children for either no money or next to nothing until you got going!
I work freelance as I have a 5 and 2 yr olds but no childcare so I work any evening/weekend but I'd love to rent a room too but that'll have to wait for now.

If you have a good support system of very helpful friends and family - go for it!
Good Luck
Becky

I live away from family and so only have a few people to rely on for childcare. My baby is too young to leave I feel just yet, I don't like being away from him however my eldest starts school in September by which time I am hoping to do more mobile work as we should have moved by then.

If you have strong support there's no reason why this wouldn't work, it depends what you want.

I nearly took a room at a hairdressers when my son was young but backed down, it wasn't the right time.

Hoping one day it will be lol!!

this is exactly what i was going to ask

Thanks everyone for your positive comments and help. It doesnt seem such a difficult thing to do. If I managed to build up a clientele and then became pregnant, I suppose, all going well, I could take a few months off and return to my existing clientele (hopefully!) and fit the hours around child care?!?
Thanks again!

That's I was thinking about, if you are planning another baby what would happen with the room and your clients during your maternity absence? Could you get someone to fill in temporarily and also would you be expected to pay your rent while you were away? I would say you likely would otherwise they could let the room go to someone else who could fill the space and pay the rent.

From personal experience, I have 3 children (now 6,7 and 10) and have been self-employed for almost five years now, initially renting in a hair salon, but the warning bells are ringing, simply because you are planning to expand your family......maybe wait until the new babe is born and over the fledgling stages. xxx

Just thought I'd add that until you've had a baby you wouldn't know how you'd feel about going back to work. If you've taken on the room for a particular period of time you may then be forced to go back before you are ready. What ever you decide good luck.:)

Ok now that puts a different light on things. If you build a good clientelle they are not going to sit around and wait for a few months while you're on maternity leave. They will either find someone new, or just not bother any more. It would be very hard to get them back after that.

I have known a couple of girls that have had no more then a few weeks off and managed (working fewer hours).

I know! That is my concern - If I start in the beauty room e.g by August and then become pregnant later this year , what do I do with the room?? ...or should I stay mobile, but I dont know when/if I will be able to have a family???? Decisions, decisions! Thanks everyone for taking the time to comment! x

If I was planning on starting a family and having signifigant time off I wouldn't bother. Do mobile with just a few clients that you can still manage to do when baby time comes, then you can build on that later.

There's no point building a clientelle that you can't keep, and people will complain when they have to find a new tech.

What does OH say?

You will have 9 months of pregnancy don't forget

Depends how much the room costs

Lets say it's £30 a day

You do an 8 hour day and fit 7 clients in @ £30 each

You earn £210 per day less costs.

Who knows if you will even fall pregnant straight away??

I say go for it and when you do become pregnant, you can cross that bridge then.

You can't live life with what if's

Gina xx

Thanks Gina! I agree, you cant put things on hold incase I get pregnant, when & if! I am going to speak to the salon owner this week and take it from there. The more I think about it, I think I have got nothing to loose and can cross that bridge when it comes. Thank you!
