Hello everybody,

I have a question for you shellac geeks. My supplier hasn’t been able to answer and I would like to know if anyone else tried the following: let’s say my client comes with her 2-3weeks old set of gels or acrylics, can I just file off some product to make the growth flush to the natural nail, and apply shellac all over it? A Shellac backfill, I’d say. :D
I know you can apply shellac over artificial nails (no base coat needed, my supplier says), but I was wondering if I could apply it BOTH to the natural nail (growth) and to the remaining gel-acrylic. This way I could do very quick 2 week fills on clients who are kind on their nails, and rebalance w/gel the whole set after another 2 weeks. What do you think, does it make sense to you? And has anyone tried?

Thanks! :D

Without knowing the right answer I would say no. The Shellac isn't an enhancing product, so as the nails grow out there will be not much strength in the area where just Shellac is applied.

I know a nailtech in my area does a quick backfill with just geltopcoat on the nails everey 14 days. It doesn't look very nice, but seems to work for her (well the nails lift etc. but as no prep is carried out the lifting could be down to that), so I could be wrong...

I have had shellac on my enhancments for over 6 weeks now and been removing and shortening debulking every 2 weeks but not re-applying acrlic only making z3 flush and keeping them short so now I have my natural nails the same length as my enhancments (whats left of them) really short just above the tip and neat. Shellac has allowed me to grow my own nails as with colour I wont pick, and it is great for my work as it wont chip peel or smudge when working with files and scrubfresh acetone etc,, I just change colour every 2 weeks, done dusted dont need to worry about my nails untill 2 weeks time and takes only 30 mins for me to do as I only have one lamp.

I never fill shellac, just remove and re-apply:D

I would say no.

Ask yourself, would you do a backfill on polish? My best guess is a no to a Shellac backfill. I don't think the product was designed for that. 2-3 weeks on, remove and reapply. HTH! :)

No, I wouldnt backfill a polish, of course :D.
What I was wondering is whether i could remove some gel or acrylic and shellac the whole nail (there would be natural nail on z3 and enhancement on z1-2). then on the following appointment (another 2wks) just remove the shellac and either apply new acrylic/gel or re-shellac it.
this way i could provide a very quick touch-up for the girls in a rush who don't like growth on their colored nails and/or make the transition from enhancements to shellac easier (without filing off the whole enhancement in a single time). Hope I explained myself :)

I'm sorry...I misunderstood your original post...:o

Personally, I wouldn't use Shellac on L&P or gel clients. Because polish lasts just as long on enhancements, I would reserve my Shellac (which is more precious than gold these days) for my natural nail clients. :)

I use on my own enhancments because I can,,lol:D:D If a client was requesting shellac over enhancments then If they wanna pay the extra that's fine by me.

Shellac is a hybrid nail colour - not an enhancement product.

However, I had couple clients who wanted to have Shellac instead of their Brisa gel polish, which they have been wearing for years now. So i filed most of the gel away and kept a small amount on, then I have applied shellac base coat, 2 coats of shellac colour, top coat. 2-3 weeks later it was perfectly removed withnshellac remover wraps, which also removed the residue of Brisa.

Don't make things too complicated for yourself and use the products for what they are meant for to avoid complications..

I love to experiment, and I have done random ones, and trust me - the best way is to stick to the correct procedure. If they are having l&p or gel, nail polish will dry quickly and last just as good. Keep precious Shellac for natural nail clients - Shellac is like liquid gold ( someone already mentioned below) these days. shellac should be promoted to new clients, to draw natural nail clientele to the salon. Not to convert your enhancement clients, cause it's not going to work.

It's unbelievable what Shellac done for my business, on natural nail clients, and all of them are new customers. :D

Hope this helps:lick:

Well, I'm going to first give you my CND EA answer- it's not recommended.

But my nail tech answer- Try it out ;)

I have done this to a couple of my clients, and it is working GREAT. The most important thing is debulking the enhancement almost as much as you would for a rebalance, but keep enough product on there to make sure it's nice and strong- then apply your SHELLAC.

I just did it this past week- file prep and manicure, then applied Red Baroness with some funky foil and rhinestones for a really cool look- and she hasn't broken one- we did this to the same client in between a couple of months ago- and she wore it for 3 weeks- and LOVED it :)

No it is NOT an enhancement product- but it IS stronger than polish. If the client isn't particularly abusive to her nails, there isn't any harm in trying it out :)

Remember that this product is new, and we are the innovators that will be trying out new tricks and techniques- and I am going to continue playing with it to try those new things out on my "innovative" clients ;)

And FYI, I have enhancement clients that also love the idea of leaving the salon DRY, and having a smudge proof shine that lasts- it's an upsell, I do charge more for it, and my clients that utilize it are happy to pay for it :)
Have fun! And post pics :)
