I had a simple system. On my stock cupboard door there was a sheet of every item. when the item was half full/or half empty if you prefer .. it went on my reorder sheet. At the end of the month, everything I needed was reordered. Other items went on as needed too also requests. I very rarely had to order an emergency item.

When I see posts on here that say .. Oh I'm out of monomer and have a client at 7am tomorrow morning. I just think .. OMG how can anyone run out of a core item like monomer?? Out of any core item in fact? I mean how can anyone run a business like that and not know?

And those that say , "oh I can't afford to get ???" We are a cash business and we make a decent profit on our services. Products are by no means our largest expense in our businesses ... so how can anyone not be able to afford what they need?? I'll tell you how. Because they spend every cent they make on other things or products they never use and never bother top put aside the money or a proportion of it to stock up on the core items they need when they need them.

As well as nail classes, everyone should take a business class if they have never run a business. I have known many a good nail tech go out of business simply because she/he didn't know the first thing about running a business. Once again, it is no coincidence that the successful nail techs are also good at the business side of things.

I was the same as Gigi, and will be again when I re-open. But my list was on a spiral bound note book.
List of basic or core items, always re ordered when half empty at the front and list of wants at the back. This was so that I always took advantage of the free postage, eg, monomer and white acrylic, needed to spend a couple more £'s to get free post, flip the book over and order those flower decals ready for the spring brides.
Also makes it so much easier when you are doing the tax return.

Yep errm I started one of those...and thats as far as i got ....

Note to self: Must print off the list I made and work to it !!

It's all about self discipline, says me who is geeking again when I have a window blind to put up in my studio:rolleyes:
We are really lucky that our suppliers are so quick to deliver but its a bad habit to get into, better to be organised then to end up jumping in the car and racing up the motorway at the last minute:lol:

I do a monthly order (just after I get the monthly specials sheet). I set myself a purchasing budget each month, proportionate to sales. I have a notebook with 2 columns, needs and wants which I update during the month.

I get all the "needs" first and take up the monthly special offers (if they fit my requirements, to make sure I am getting the best possible discounts) then with monies left over I look at the "wants" and choose accordingly. Some months I am even under budget so I then carry forward the balance to the next month, this way I have monies allocated for product and never run out. Personally I can't understand techs running out of product, do they run out of petrol in their car to???

That's the difference between someone who runs a nail business and someone who does nails to make some extra cash on the side.

Anyway, keeping to the original topic - I have a list done up in excel of all my products, this includes everything from monomer to cotton wool, tea & coffee to business cards. The list also has a re-order point for each item as I like to keep more of certain products on hand. I go around the salon once a week and check everything then order if necessary.

This system is starting to show me which items I can afford to purchase in bulk and which to only keep a small amount of. I'm very organised with this system, it sounds like a lot of work, but really only takes a few minutes to check everything over at the end of the week.

I have mine on my computer, my stock list such as Ange does. (gotta love Excel)

The stock list I check it against my kit weekly and like Geeg, if I have half of something it goes on reorder list to be done monthly.

This way I never run out of anything EVER. I also have my wish list on there so I can peruse the specials and if something on the wish list is on special on a particular month it gets ordered too (ie. ezflow coloured powders, nu fi oh colours, etc).

HTH's

Nancy :)
